tinytawnykitten
Are there any plants that some peacocks, a sev and some powder blues could have in the tank and not eat?
ryanjury
Plastic ones? lol Maybe java fern or anubias?
phoenix44
i have javafern, anubias and crypts. they haven't bothered eating plants. i think the theory of them being voracious plant eaters is a tad over the top. they destroy mosses but that's about it really. ryanjury
I can only put those plants in certain tanks I tried them in my big tank and they destroyed them all.. It also depends on the individual fish, the breed, how well fed they are and all manner of other variables. As with all advice it is hard to make a blanket statement saying africans do/don't eat plants but generally most of them will eat them
smidey
all the plants i have ever tried in my african tanks were floating by the second day. they bent them over & dug them up, elplastico plants it is for me.
phoenix44
train them not to eat them?
herefishiefishie
Its not the eating. Its more to do with the robust nature of cichlids & their digging. Frenchy
livingart
i tried anubias and java in the big tank anubias has done fairly well but i am constantly removing pieces of java from the overflow comb and it was big java originally
firenzenz
I rubberband the roots anubias and javafern to coral rock and wood to let them take hold for a few weeks. I think it as much as the fish feeding on any algae etc that might build up on the plant as much as the plant itself. The result is worth the hassle although as with livingart, I do have to collect the odd piece from intake.
smidey
i have tried several tims to have plants but they always get bashed. It doesn't appear taht the aficans actually eat them but they seem to just smash them up for something to do.
