phoenix44
LIke common plecos, (gibbys) red spots and gold spots should be fine. even 1 large royal panaque would be fine.

cichlid7
yep just common's i think it was something to do with them sucking on their eye's and causing the bichir's to go blind or something like that. sounded strange whatever it was

phoenix44
and here when I find a big pleco I find free homes for them. im sure lots of people out there will be very happy to give you overgrown ones. just ask the fishy people at your shops etc to keep an eye out for a large pleco that belongs to a customer that wants a small one. then you can arrange to swap. Morcs
Big common plecos have been known to suck the slime coat off of birchirs causing them to die. From the amount ive read of peoples experiences, its seems to be about 50/50 of whether its happened or not. Personally risking a birchir for a pleco isnt worth it. If they are plecos that get to about 15cm max like bristlenoses, id say no worries. wheres David R when you need him, he'll know the definitive answer
livingart
i have run big plecs an bichir together no probs personally i couldn't see a bichir sitting there and taking a plec sucking on it but who knows i see some posts on MFK stating that
Lucid
We also had no probs. 30cm+ pleco and 50-60cm ornate, no probs at all between them.

But yes, theres quite a lot on MFK, hence id be wary, unless the americans have psychopathic plecos?
David R
wheres David R when you need him, he'll know the definitive answer I'll get in trouble if I post a link to where I have been..... Plecos + polypterus are a bit hit and miss, a lot of the time it is fine, but sometimes a pleco can develop a taste for slimecoat and will start rasping the bichir like a piece of wood. As soon as you see a sign of this you should separate them immediately.
