gem_scott
Is it legal to keep butterfly carp? If not what kind of a licence would i need? If they are illegal then why are carp in the botanical gardens ponds? I think they are really cool but all the research iv done has all been on web sites that are from the UK or US. If they are legal, is there anyone who breeds them? I found a web site that sell them and they are all around $400 unfortunately that means shipping them in to the country but i still really want to breed them! Ira
From what I can see they're a strain of Koi. In which case the answer is hell no they're not legal to keep.
alanmin4304
$400 would be cheap because when you get them here they would probably be worth a couple of hundred thousand and a couple of years holiday.

paul_r
that does bring up the question, how are some people/places allowed them in ornamental gardens etc, can think of a few places off the top of my head where there are koi carp or are they not allowed period? Caryl
They are not allowed. If someone complains, or points them out, perhaps they are destroyed then. :-?
phoenix44
I think containment facilities are allowed carp.
Cricketman
Theres grass carp that they are trying to use for multi-culture (aquaculture + agriculture) the carp feed on the insects etc that live in the roots/leaves of the rice/other water-borne crop, they createa rich matt of nutrients that then feeds the rice. come harvest time, the carp and the rice are both eaten! 2 for the price of 1! Maybe the gardens have a special "educational " deal going whereby they can keep them but tell people that they are a noxious pest and "this" is what they look like... :-? gem_scott
So maybe if i hold tours around my backyard i can 'show people what not to have' and then its legal lol
Ira
Only if you apply for and are given the appropriate licenses. It looks like you may need to have a licensed containment facility, a zoo license and then apply for a special license for each species you want.
