Neon
I've just been cleaning out my 3 foot tank as it had got really overgrown, and discovered a cloud of firemouth fry. :bounce: I'm really excited as I wasn't even sure if I had a pair; in fact I assumed they weren't since the larger firemouth always picks on the smaller one. Should I take the dad out of the tank or just leave them to it? Mum seems to be doing a good job so far - very fiesty! The other fish in the tank are platies, guppies and one bristlenose - I assume the firemouths will be able to protect the fry from these? phoenix44
I would leave them to it. Firemouths are among the best parents out there. Its a true spectacle to see hundreds of fry with the parents!!
Neon
Yeah I hope these ones turn out to be good parents... I'd love to have some of the fry survive. I didn't have much luck with the dwarf flag cichlid fry I had last year
SamH
Congratulations! Hoping to get a pair of Firemouths, will they do well in a 2ft cube aquarium? Do they touch plants?
livingart
yes they touch plants don't seem to eat them though they are known to be omnivorous
SamH
yes they touch plants don't seem to eat them though Considered being a full-time comdedian? 2ft cube big enough for a pair?
phoenix44
2x2x2? yeh that will be fine. they like sand. they like digging holes. decoy pits. and then then lay eggs in one of the pits. sometimes they pretend to defend a decoy pit to fool predators (i am not a predator, but it was funny to see). the males like flaring. they uproot everything too. Neon
Actually mine have been fine with plants and they haven't uprooted them at all. I have gravel in my tank rather than sand.
