Myah
I have found out that this little dude came from the importers (they don't buy fish off private breeders) of his parents, straight to the shop I spotted him at. My query is, if its a hybrid, would that mean its parents were in a container with other cichlids or is it a possability the people breed their own fish? You can't see it too well on the photos but there is a red/orange stripe along the top of the dorsal fin.
Morcs
To me that definately looks like a dwarf flag cichlid (Laetacara curviceps).
phoenix44
To me that definately looks like a dwarf flag cichlid (Laetacara curviceps). It's definitely an african zebra of some sort. This is a dwarf flag:
Dixon1990
Definately looks nothing like a dwarf flag to me I would say definately a african. :-?

ryanjury
To me that definately looks like a dwarf flag cichlid (Laetacara curviceps). lol hmm its about as far away from a dwarf flag as you can get, it is definitely some sort of mbuna probably a hybrid zebra.. What wholesaler/importer did they come from? Brooklands has its own breeders that supply most of their african species.
phoenix44
would that mean its parents were in a container with other cichlids or is it a possability the people breed their own fish? both. it could be that the parents of this fish were in a tank with more than one type of zebra in it. it could also be that someone has deliberately bred this little fella - or conversely it could have just been an accident. Myah
This little dude came from Brooklands and was in a bag with young swordtail and guppy when delivered to the shop I got him from. I was in the shop when it was delivered (always looking at new fish).
ryanjury
Brooklands have all sorts of zebras on their list, some of them are just a bunch of randoms, still nice fish but of unknown parentage and origin.

Myah
LOL didn't see 'feeder fish' written on the bag. They are purple emperor tetra. So how would I know if any fish I got from any importers were the real thing or hybrids? Not that I mind my little dude. It gets on well with its tank mates and the colour changes depending on its mood, are neat.
phoenix44
when your little dude gets bigger - and he will get bigger you may have a problem on your hands. just something to be weary off. if you want non hybrids for sure, then best to get them off breeders directly. there are lots on here. smidey
with it being an african it will grow & want to breed, it may then play chase & destroy with your other more polite fish. Just something to think about.
livingart
it will be interesting to see what it grows into, colours should be good
