  1. Cool info, thanks. Will look into where I can go at night and read up some more. You guys and gals are great.
  2. I've been reading a bit about the native fish and what I wanted to know was, if I was to catch something in a net that I'm not sure is a Bully, does that mean I can't put it back in where ever it was I got it from either the same day or the next morning (if night netting)?
  3. Thanks again, don't really know anyone in town but the librarian may be of some help as to who I can ask.
  4. Great, there is a lovely library here. We are quite near the sea and the Patea river runs just down the road a bit from my house but I really wouldn't have a clue as to where the best place to catch them would be. Do they need special foods? And they grow to about 12cm, is that right? Are they one of the ones that are not allowed to be sold live?
  5. Wow, I love those red bullies. Where would be the best place to get some? I live in Patea, Taranaki so not sure where I would go to catch any native fish or what to feed them. There are no kids at home anymore just my older sister and I. The fish are my 'thing' for stress release, although my sister has been showing interest in the tropicals I have. I really do appreciate all your suggestions and help. Thank you.
  6. I don't know much about Native NZ fish. What sort did you have in mind and are they colourful F15hguy?
  7. Thank you all for your help. I don't have a pond anymore due to shifting house and decided to start a cold water tank (try and keep the power bill down a little by not having to have heaters in tank) so the fish would be young small ones to begin with, that's why I was enquiring about how many would be fine in this tank size in years to come when they are full grown. I didn't want any problems with over crowding down the track and want my fish to be happy.
  8. Hi Ron, I'm thinking about their size in advance as to when they are full grown. I've had ordinary goldfish in the pond I had years ago grow to about 12 inches and some larger, but I don't think they were comets. I'm trying to figure out how many I could have in this size tank as I can't get a larger tank later on down the line (although I'd love a bigger one but tropical :bggrn: ). I hope that makes sense.
  9. Hi Caryl, thank you for that. I had to admit my maths is not that great and I don't want to make the mistake of putting too many fish in this tank. So if you could help me out with the actual amount of fish I may be able to put in it, I would be greatful. I have an Aqua One Nautilus 2700 canister filter for the tank as well as smaller Aqua One canister that I can't remember the size of. I would be running an Eheim 200 air pump.
  10. Hi, how many comets and black moor could I have living in a 2mtr x 600cm x 600cm tank with good filtration and air circulation? Sorry, I've redone the measurements. The tank is 220cm long x 60cm x 60cm.
  11. Thank you everyone for your replies and ideas, I'll definately look into your suggestions. :bggrn:
  12. Thanks for the reply disgustipated, would you be able to suggest any other type of fish that may be suitable in the green, dark red or dark blue colour range?
  13. Hi all, I have 4 clown loach, several electric yellow young, 2 longfinned golden bristlenose catfish and 2 angelfish in a 2mtr x 600 x 600 tank. The tank has plenty of rocks and hiding places and some twisted val in it. I was wondering if a couple of Severum would live with peacefully with the other fish and if this size tank would be suitable. Because all the other fish are yellow or orange and black, I was wanting to get something of a different colour ie: green, dark red or dark blue. Any help would be appreciated.
  14. Hi all, I stripped my Electric yellow female and have 9 fry. Mum is yellow with a white belly, black line through her dorsal fin and distinctive white on her front belly fins (sorry can't remember what they are called). Dad is a lovely bright yellow with the black line on all fins. The fry are have been free swimming and eating for over a week now and all are white in colour. Will they start to yellow up soon or will they stay white. There is no chance of the fry being from any other fish in the main tank as I only have the 4 Electric yellow and only the one is a female so she had her own tank to save her being bullied. Thanks for any replies.
  15. Thanks Blueether, I'll pass on that info.
  16. I have a friend that thinks he has a bacterial bloom in his tank. The water is sort of cloudy is how he described it to me. What should he do? He has Plattys and Mollys which do not look stressed or sick, small internal filter (not sure what type) and his temp is 78o.
  17. Hi Adrienne, yes her right eye does look like those pictures. The slight swelling of her left eye has gone down. I did a water change in the main tank yesterday and she was fine. This morning they were darting round spawning, that's when I noticed her eyes. Thank you for your help.
  18. Thank you for your help F15hguy, will keep her in observation.
  19. Hi everyone, haven't been around for quite awhile but I hope someone can help my little fish. My neon tetra have been busy spawning and I noticed that one of the females has swollen eyes. Her right eye is much larger than the left one. I have put her in a separate tank from the others. She is eating okay but does seem to have a little bit of a problem swimming in a straight line. Doesn't appear to be stressing. Any ideas what could have caused this or what I can do to help her? All the other fish in the large tank look fine. Thanks in advance for ANY input.
  20. Hi, I have set up my 4ftx2ftx2ft tank for 11 young Rustys. Are there any other type of fish (other than sucker fish)that I can put in with them that are NOT cichlid? Thanks for any help.
  21. Hiya, I've been looking at making a weir/overflow for my 4ft x 2ft x 2ft tank. I've copied the plans that have been posted on this forum and would like to know if there is a specific literage size the weir has to be? I already have a sump up and running well on my 2mtr tank (which is drilled) all works well when the power goes off and want to join the 4ft tank onto the piping but because it's not drilled, am going to have a go making weir/overflow.
  22. So what colour would these two be? Any ideas? The one with the black line through it's eye is a male. Photos aren't the best, were taken with cellphone. I was given these a little while ago and were told they were blue, they look more like a powdery grey with bluey tinges. Cute though
  23. Does anyone here have photos they can share, or breed blue freshwater tropical angelfish?
  24. Thanks guys for the info.
