bulldogod
could I use this in a tank that also has healthy fish in it? Save changing everything around?
LYNDYLOO
Waste of good meds really, But if that's the only way you can treat the Tank, then I would go ahead.
bulldogod
Quick reply, why is it a waste of meds?Thought dosage went on how much water in the tank?
mickey_1975
Hi, if you separate sick fish into isolation tank that is smaller you dont use as much meds. You are also only treating sick fish instead of all the fish.
alanmin4304
It depends what you are treating. With some infectious diseases you need to treat the tank.
Stella
Meds work better if there is just the fish for them to work against. Depending on hte action of the medication, some will be trying to kill all microorganisms so is working against the entire established tank, others get neutralised by various natural processes within the tank. Both of which are a waste of good meds. Further, you will know the actual volume better of a hospital tank than your main tank.
Aquila
Plus you won't risk staining anything. Furan-2 also contains carcinogens. Its better to just have it set up in a hospital tank where you can wear gloves and clean the equipment properly after treatment. You don't want that stuff lingering in your normal setup and risk exposing yourself unknowingly.
phoenix44
Furan-2 also contains carcinogens. . which ones?
darkfur
the furanizole or whatever the heck it is is the carcinogen if you keep it off your hands and don't mouth-siphon it probably won't kill you for many years
Aquila
which ones? Its the Nitrofurazone...warns so right on the back of the package. Shown to produce mammary tumors on rats and ovarian tumors on mice. I haven't had the time to look these studies up in journals so I'm just going to believe them. Don't let it touch your skin and don't breath it in. If you have a bubbler going, put a lid on the tank.
phoenix44
Nitrofurazone is used on horses all the time! Now i shall go do some readings and make a few calls
Aquila
Here are a few articles that you could look up. Let me know if u don't have access to it through uni and I can email you the pdf. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15488632 http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=1527305 http://grande.nal.usda.gov/ibids/index. ... row=374167
phoenix44
The amount of 95% furan I would have to ingest to start showing signs of cancer is sooo high that im actually more afraid of getting skin cancer cause of the sun. good to be cautious though, I personally would not go all out and protect my self from "exposure" pS- i unfortunately do not have the packaging for furan as i bought the commercial pack a while ago. Aquila
Yeah, I'm sure they overdosed the mice. And just because it does that in mice doesn't mean it'll do it in humans. Better safe them sorry though, its not any harder to deal with it with gloves on than without...
darkfur
doesn't pretty much everything give mice tumours?
Aquila
I think pretty much everything gives humans tumours these days too
phoenix44
female mice and rats are genetically predisposed to getting tumours, as they all came from a very small population of domesticated lab rats and mice that were deliberately experimented on to give them cancers and tumours. over time the gene pool was not altered - as that is what they were bred for. That's why they get tumours. particularly females.
skippy_49nz
Maybe I don't have enough furazoles in my diet...

phoenix44
dramatic muchly? you have nothing to worry about. that "scientific" paper is anything but - too much emotive language. (everything causes cancers these days). you should be petrified of developing cancer by second hand smoke and being stuck by lighting all at the same time
