twinkles
my javas have just started doing that, i was amazed, never seen a plant do anything like it. When i bought them they were really manky with one or two leaves each, chopped in half, so i'm stocked to see all the new bits growing. Can you pull them off and plant them seperatly once they grow a bit?
phoenix44
is yours tropica, the normal or windelov? I have windelov as well - that is picking up too thankfully. This plant has characteristic poseidon trident shaped leaves. those are branching off. they automatically detach once they are old and big enough - then float away and attach them selves to something. supasi
The one you have there P44 is the same as all the ones I have. Nothing special about it. I suggest you go back to the supplier and ask why they sold as tropica! Here is some pics and a link to tropica website product card http://www.tropica.com/productcard_1.asp?id=008E
phoenix44
many thanks! now i will get some of that  but what do i have?
alanmin4304
I don't think tropica is in the country. Tropica also have a patent on it so you cannot sell it without being licenced to tropica. Yours looks like the normal pteropus. As I understand it there is the normal, phillippine, narrow and windelov (frilled). Try a google search, there are some good pics. There are no pics on the tropica site at the moment but older ones will come up on google. None on plantgeek either.
A-town...
I know someone that use to import stuff from tropica themselves many moons ago, so does this mean the stuff they got in ages ago is no longer allowed here? even if they have the paperwork? alanmin4304
I have never seen it available here and don't believe it is in NZ.
phoenix44
well what Tropica did was pretty ingenious. they applied for, and were granted a species protection - effectively a patent on the plant. hmm. well if it comes here then ill let you guys know. A-town...
I spoke with my friend and he did have it "licenced"by tropica 14-16 years ago. he use to import a lot of plants from them.
phoenix44
so there is a narrow chance that it is still here then.

Not bad for something that was probably a sport off a normal old java fern!
alanmin4304
Like a lot of things--It is knowing that you have something that is different and commercial. A bit like the tradesman that charges 10 cents for the part and $20 for knowing where to put it.
JazzyJeff
is yours tropica, the normal or windelov? I have windelov as well - that is picking up too thankfully. This plant has characteristic poseidon trident shaped leaves. those are branching off. they automatically detach once they are old and big enough - then float away and attach them selves to something. Wow! Really? I was so gutted when mine grew these scruffy looking leaves and roots at the end of the main leaves. I thought it made the plant look manky! Funny... how long will it take for the "baby" to leave home?
phoenix44
dunno how long it will take. I dont know a lot about java ferns to be honest. they don't like as much light as I am willing to give them
alanmin4304
I read somewhere that the harder the water the more light they need.
whetu
Every time I do a water change and tank-tidy I run my fingers through the java ferns and tear the babies away from the mummy plants! Then I throw them out in the compost! They really do make the plants look untidy. If anyone wants all the babies they can handle and is willing to pick them up, you can have them!
