BikBok
I just did a water change on my tank and discovered I had platy fry in there! I had no idea they were there or for how long. They look way bigger than guppy newborns so what is the avg size of a newborn platy? just trying to figure out how old they are. I gave them some dacaps brine shrimp eggs but they seem uninterested... what next? crushed flakes?
BikBok
a few have tasted the decaps but they don't seem that keen! my guppy fry gobble them up! Eeek I got a fright when I turned the tank back on.. the filter didn't go! I took out the impeller and checked that it was clean and free of gunk and reasembled everything twice over before it worked again. Hope it's not going to fail anytime soon. (it's only 4 months old - came with the blue planet)
darkfur
platy fry are good eaters on account of their size. they will usually eat crushed flake happily
BikBok
thanks, I'll try the crushed flake. they're good at hiding.. I would have missed them if it wasn't for the water change!
JazzyJeff
Congrats on your fry BB! Baby wagtails - now they will be cute!!
SamH
I have 5 baby wagtails in an 80 litre tank all by themselves, boy do they love the room!
BikBok
i have 5 too, they have to share with the betta but they've outrun him everytime and now I think he's given up! Baby wags - sooo cute with their little black tails. I'm also excited that one of my male guppy frys is now 4 weeks old and looks like he's going to be a snakeskin! Yay! How soon do these guys breed? he's already waggling that gonopodium and following the girls.
BikBok
Does anyone know of a online growth chart for platy fry? Just wondering how quickly they'll grow and what age would be suitable to rehome them. The parents are red/orange wagtails , what can I expect the babies to be? So far at 10 days they all have black or mostly black tails and fins. And some look more red than the others and some have patchy blotches of black over their body too... does this mean I'll have all sorts or will they eventually colour up as red wagtails. Sorry for the terrible and tiny photo but here is a pic of the three i could get on camera...
SamH
They look just like mine! I'm considering keeping mine, I'm getting quite attached. If they didn't grow so big then I'd ask to buy yours and have a nice school in my 3 footer
BikBok
thye're very cute dashing around like little bees.. way cuter than baby guppies! My tank is too small to keep them so I need to find them a new home .. i might put them on TM but wondering if it's too soon...
SamH
I think the rule is when they can eat normal fish food and are big enough not to be swallowed, they can be sold.
Caryl
There are too many factors affecting growth to have an accurate chart I would think. Feed little and often, keep up the water changes, and don't overcrowd. This will ensure your fry grow quickly and well.
BikBok
at what age can you tell male and female apart? are they like guppies and the males slowly grow a gonopdium from one of their fan fins? Any other tell tale signs because I can't detect a gravid spot on the adult female.. let alone looking for one in fry!
Caryl
Same as guppies.
Derek Johnson
Hi team, so my builder is going to place some Perspex in to divide off a smallish section of our tank. However what size holes diameter! do we drill to have water circulate to keep them in. Thanks Derek
Caryl
Make whatever size holes you like and cover them with netting, or a bit of mesh, to stop fry from getting through, if that is what the divider is for. Otherwise, if this is for platy fry, they are quite large so make the holes slightly smaller than the fry. Won't matter if one or two get through as you will be over-run with fry quickly if you save them all. You could also get solid mesh netting that would do the trick or perhaps a metal, or Perspex frame with mesh siliconed or fastened some other way to it. A heavily planted tank (especially with fine leafed plants like water sprite, Indian fern or Java moss) will ensure enough fry survive each month without you ending up with hundreds of fry you don't have space for and can't get rid of and you don't need to build a divider.
