lmsmith
I'm looking at buying a refractometer sometime because I want to make my brackish puffer tank full marine and do the coral thing. I know my hydrometer isn't a very reliable way of testing salinity, so was looking around for different things. This one works out to be about $60NZ inc shipping, which seems pretty good. I'm not sure if it's a good one or not, and if it would last. What brands do you recommend? Would this be ok? Where in NZ can you buy them? TIA. puttputt
Will be fine and price good, just make sure it has Automatic temp correction, ATC.
camnbron
But that link has a pretty cheap price. If you don't want to buy from overseas, your LFS should either have one in stock or will be able to order one in for you. Alternately I have seen refractometers listed on a NZ online store. lmsmith
There is one for $30 on the auction site That one sold for $74. Does anyone know of one I can buy here in NZ? I'd rather the money went into our economy if I can.

Pretty much any shop can get them - just get them to order one that suits your budget.
lmsmith
What approximate price range am I looking at?
lmsmith
Nope, not together. There would be some big, fat, happy puffers! One day, when I get rich . I just don't want to fall into the trap of having my puffers water at 1.040 or something stupid because I topped up wrong or miscalculated. My crappy hydrometer reads fresh water anywhere between 1.000 and 1.006, so I don't really trust it.
