alanmin4304
Your Sag is a boy. There is a smaller Sag called microfolia. Blue light makes compact growth and encourages flowers. With intense light but not so blue eg 6500k, subulata will grow to 500mm.
phoenix44
:bounce: lol yeah... i got girl flowers too. i think i read a post in an old thread and you had explained how to tell the sexes apart. i read that and waited for the flowers  I only got to know about microfolia when you told me about it a couple of months ago. I always thought subulata would stay small - but then you can see how its grown in my tank, and that threw that theory out the door, lol... I think my tank needs a prune, but i love my plants (often more so than my fish) and I dont know how to properly prune my tank, without ruining it and uprooting the whole thing. A-town...
digging up an old thread but what tubes did you use and where did you get them from? I need t8 tubes at mitre 10 they had cool white and cool daylight or something which is better for plants and why? alan can you help  thanks
alanmin4304
Everone has their own preferences. I use lumiflor and cool white in combination. Lumiflor is like growlux but I suspect a bit more red. The 18000 tubes are high in blue so encourage compact growth and flowering (normally used for corals I think). Red will make for tall skinny growth. Plants need red and blue light and the growlux type tubes are designed to provide that. I grow a lot of plants emersed and have been a bit slack bringing them inside for the winter but will very shortly. Last year I used lumiflor tubes but this year I was going to replace one with a lumilux blue (gives off very blue light) as an experiment. I couldn't get a 30 watt 18000 T8 tube or I would have used that. I get my tubes from Lamp specialists. A tank 500mm or more high will need good light to get to the bottom if you want ground cover plants. If you are going to only grow the larger plants that will become emersed then they will be closer to the lights and you will not need as much. Dave+Amy
Phoenix - I'm so jealous...my Sag I got from you won't grow and not only that but I've managed to melt even more of it do you think it could be from me pouring water directly on it? How do you add your water during wc?
phoenix44
you killed my precious babies? I just drain the tank with a pipe from one end - the water goes onto the back deck. Then when about a third of the tank has drained - i shove another pipe in the tank from the other end and turn on the tap. water keeps draining, and filling, and then when it fills up i remove the water out pipe and turn off the tap. WC done. my tank gets water very violently sprayed into it.

jc360
hey im using twin 54watt t5 18000k power Glos with a highly polished reflector. Question is and i know its been discussed but some direct communication here would be great! Is this too much light for my tank? it is 700mm high. Would this amount of light be the cause of sword leaves turning brown?
alanmin4304
700mm is high for a plant tank so you get the problem of light penetration. Ground cover plants will not get much light but taller plants will get heaps. You also have a lot of blue and little red and red does not penetrate water as well as blue and plants need both. I would think a bit more red light might help (growlux, plantgrow or lumiflor). The short answer is probably no to the amount and maybe to the type.
