Candy Stripe Pleco, Peckoltia vittata

the Planet catfish pics certainly look like your one. The patterning of my Panaques changed as they grew. Flash plecos are stunning when small with wide white bands. As adults the bands are much narrower and quite yellow and they are darker overall. I'd say a leopard frog plecos a pretty good bet.

everything looks exactly the same!

so it must be a leopard frog plec? L134?

but on the main fish ID site, the L134 looks different =(

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/im ... ge_id=8165

that fish is listed as a L134 - but looks more like a butterfly plec - which ive also got. so now im even more confused.

the species gets darker with age apparently. perhaps this is the case?

Well if they came into the country as Leopard frog plecos and look like leopard frog plecos, then theres a pretty good chance they are. There's a number of similar looking species but that seems like a pretty good bet.

Shes certainly a great looking pleco. You'll have to post pics when shes full grown. You're not tempted to get another one or two to see if you can get a pair. By all accounts Peckoltias are quite breedable. :D:D

they are but they are also unfortunately somewhat addictive. I only started out with one pleco some time ago and now I have to resist the temptation to get more. I'm sure there are a number of fish keepers on the forum that have similar problems with other types of fish (discus, Africans, Orandas, etc ....).

There is also every chance that the leopard frogs may not come into the country many more times and I'm sure babies would be in demand.

DEAD! :o:(:(:(:(:(

no visual signs to why she is but after the necropsy it was clear why she died

look what i found in her:

DSC04300Small.jpg

about 15 - 18 eggs. least i think they are eggs, she was pretty fat - and she looked like a breeding tube or something similar was coming out of her.

I knew the menstrual process still takes place in females, but i thought they would have laid the unfertilised eggs? any help would be nice. especially if you know more about the anatomy of fish than I do.

did the test this morning. water stats are good

BN's dont live cause of the temp in the tank (29 degrees) apparently.

all the other plecs are happy as.. eating... pooing.. doing normal pleco stuff.

there's a good chance the snowball is still in there,

Sorry to hear you lost her :( From the initial photo she looked quite fat when you got her, and from the eggs I would pick egg bound too.

From the research I have done (and the egg bound apisto's I have had recently) they can usually reabsorb the eggs and be fine, but if conditions aren't right or your unlucky they can get a bacterial infection which needs to be treated or they die.

yep definetly eggs dont know the cause of yr probs if params are fine what else was noticable about her ? damaged ? sunken eyes ? could be anything ,sad to hear and see thou know that feeling alright :(

no signs at all. all i noticed ever since i got her was this breeding tube like thing.. but then i dont know as much about plec as id like to.

her stomach was convex at the base... and i have some plecs that are fattish, but they don't have bulging stomachs.

so they are definitely eggs? cause they are huge! i couldnt believe it when i saw them... cant imagine how something that big could come out a fish that small :o

its a real pity.. was only 40 bucks.. but was such a cool looking fish. :(

Ryan's on the money with reabsorption and bacterial infection.

Also, did you have a cave?

Do you know the sex of the L168?

Did she have any abrasions down the her sides. these can be barely noticeable.

her trying to get into a cave and been killed by L168 as he had no reason to let let her in ,is a possibilty.

There are no such things as pleco buddies, once territories are contended.

Also on the L134- I disagree. Perhaps posting shot of your on PC would confirm this.

These fish were imported as I'm aware through Aquarists, who is notorious for being supplied plecs with unconfirmed ID's from an American supplier for a good price. An ID and title is given at this end based exactly on what you guys have done on this thread. Searching till you find something close enough to

"close the case".

Other recent imports have been- "Bumblebee pleco", L254 brought in as blue phantoms, and the "bluespot pleco".

The good thing is that peckoltias are obviously allowed in so maybe we can get in some L134 Leopard frog mouths.

Plecs are fantastic and also do my head in when this sort of stuff happen.

Sorry for your loss.

the tank has a lot of driftwood, plants and caves. Many many hidey holes etc. I'll PM you a pic.

sorry, cant figure out what this means :o .. if it helps, the fish images i posted before were of my fish.

Do you know the sex of the L168?

No. :o it was just given to me ages ago.

L168 seemed ok with her. none of that territorial flaring up, and/or nudging her etc.... though once the L134 - (if we can call her that) explored the tank, she preferred being at the rear LHS corner under the internal filter.

Having a male wouldn't have helped the problem fish become egg bound with mates too it just happens and plenty of people keep solo females with no problems.

PC means planet catfish, like everything it is always best to submit photos or harder questions to more specialised international forums where many of the dedicated experts hang out.
