Change around

Have had a bit of a change around with the tank my killies were in. Had a mop in there and was taking it out every now and then, only to be finding 2-3 eggs at a time (and a few snails  ). Have been feeding them tubifex a bit and leaving the mop in there, now collecting 3-4 eggs a day. Was wondering if the male was infertile?? as nothing has become of any eggs collected, so now ... hope this works... all eggs are going into a partitioned part of the tank with camboba and java moss to float on. Only thing is there's not much water movement. Is this necessary?

What are you doing with the eggs from the mop?

Was putting them in a seperate container but nothing was happening. Now, ie; last couple of days, just collecting and placing in a sectioned off part of the tank onto some ambulia. No idea if anything is happening to them as i cant see them. Will just look out for some wrigglers in a few days.

Put the eggs in a small container with a bit of meth blue... that help stop fungussing.

They sometimes will lay heaps of eggs for say 2 or 3 months, then just dont bother at all.

One way to often start them off again is to raise the ph to 7 .

Both my Chocs and Golds are on strike at the moment although the chocs laid about 10 eggs this morning.

Feeding small amounts of food twice a day is also better than once a day just as live food is better than frozen or dried

Yeah australe eggs seem to be a little more fragile them most.

You could always try putting them in a temp spawning set up.

Small tank 200x300x200mm (no heating this time of year)

small sponge filter

Clump of moss

scatter saturated peat over the base of tank

Feed bbs, blood worms and any other live food you can get your hands on.

Remove breeders after 10-14 days(1 trio)

Then put a small amount of micro worms in the tank and wait 1 week(or a drip of bbs every other day).

after 1 week feed a drip of bbs after dark, give it 10min then shine a flash light in (from the side so you see across the beam) to see if you can see anything.

Or try what Barrie mentioned.

Hmm, the females like to chase the male too. 4 blue eggs in the container now. Just added another 5 from the mop. Blue ones will be infertile huh. Do the females just lay eggs by themselves or do they need a male to get them in the mood? 8)

Normally they wont lay unless there is a male in the tank but if the male is not doing the business (not really interested) then the eggs wont have a very good strike rate.

Aaron

Try puting them in another tank in a different position and raising the ph

All the eggs are going blue. Shame really as theyre cool fish. They will eat from your fingers and all. Will keep an eye out in the newsletter for some eggs, of if anyone has a few spare? - Gold Australe - Happy to pay etc or can swap for some brine shrimp eggs?
