phoenix44
Can medication like meth blue, and furan (antibiotics - gram negative) have a negative effect on aquatic plants? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this matter.
alanmin4304
I have never had a problem with plants when using either of those. Formaldehyde can be hard on plants and Flourish excel can be tough on Riccia and twisted Valisneria. It is hard on Anacharis as well but that is OK because you shouldn't have it anyway. Pity there wasn't something that was selectively hard on pond weed.
phoenix44
brilliant. lol.. that's one less worry. it takes a lot of patience and care to grow pet shop plants submersed (properly) and the last thing i want is for them to die, ha ha. thanks alan. Jaide
My plants didn't like furan, so probably wouldn't like meth either.
nemines
biggest problem would probably be a reduction in light intensity which could adversely affect your plants. activated carbon for a couple of days at end of treatment should be sort that out ideally you'd want to set up a hospital tank to isolate the fish and also, if your main tank is large, save on medications. phoenix44
im using 3 tanks to treat fish at the moment, and the 4 ft which has the plants in it is being very severely treated. so no choice there im afraid. cleaning the tank wont be a problem, i just dont want my plants to die too. Jaide
so no choice there im afraid. Course there is, pull them out and put them in a bucket of water if you have to.
alanmin4304
What diseases are you treating, and with what?
phoenix44
pull them out? the roots are far too established. i couldnt pull them out when i moved house. i pulled one small clump out and it removed a chunk of gravel. this 4 foot tank has no visible gravel.. its all plant. the gravel is only visible from the sides of the glass where you can see how deep the layer of gravel is. the treatment is almost over :bounce: ill give it a couple of days at most and then ill have to think of some new fish. plants seem fine so far. thanks for the info though :bounce:
phoenix44
alanamin refer the diseases section topic titled "on a brighter note". no one really knows what it is. basically the tank has been treated with meth blue, meth green, quinine, amoxocillin, oxytetracycline, furan II and a few other things. Not all at the same time though don't worry, lol. the quinine and CuSO4 seems to have done the trick though.
phoenix44
ok another question... didnt see the point od starting a new thead, since it is a general plant question. why is it that the indian fern in my nano is going a rust colour? not completely rust coloured, but just the tips and now it looks like it is spreading... could it be that there is too much iron in the water? Caryl
It often does this and new plantlets grow from the "rusty" bits.
