lmsmith
Awesome! Did you hatch them with the parents or take them out?
oeminx
i hatched them my self by putting the eggs in a small container floating in one of my tanks. The eggs didn't have a air stone so only hatched out mayb 1/3 the eggs that were laid. once hatch tho iv only lost 3 fry.
lmsmith
Thats not a bad survival rate. Did they lay on a stone that was easy to take out?
oeminx
leaf of my tiger lotus, that they love spawning on, so i just cut it off
lmsmith
Oh lucky, mine always spawn on a piece of driftwood, which is such a pain to remove! Well I hope they keep surviving for you!
Dave+Amy
Will they not lay if in a bare bottom tank? Was thinking about a bare bottom tank for them for the ease of cleaning. Can't wait for my breeding tank to arrive now!
Discusguru
yes they will. They will lay in any tank when they are ready. Use to breed heaps of these before and all in 1 ft bb tank with a small sponge filter and heater.
lmsmith
Wow, so I came home tonight to a whole heap of ram eggs!!! Hopefully, they'll be able to keep and raise the babies.

Dave+Amy
how long generally does it take for eggs to hatch and get to free swimming phase? Also - how long between each spawn?
tracytrout
Congrats Lauren...that's awesome news :bounce: Hope you get fry this time
oeminx
2-3 days till the eggs hatch then another 2-3 days to free swimming. my pair will spawn at varying intervals from a week to a month.
Dave+Amy
...what colour are the eggs? I know it's a stupid question but I don't know what to look out for. Also I think my Gold Rams have paired off too - they now own the Indian Fern wall which means the remaining two Blue Rams are getting beaten up by the two pairs ALL THE TIME
lmsmith
Their eegs are really tiny and white. You should be able to find them because they'll hang around them all the time.
oeminx
you'll know when they lay. How big is you tank and do you have another tank you could put a pair of blues in?
Dave+Amy
They're in my 6foot community tank - I have a breeding tank coming in so I'll put both pairs into the breeding setup. I have a feeling that I might have siphoned up some eggs from the blue rams when cleaning the tank today, would they lay on gravel? They kept on attacking the siphon...didn't think much of it at the time EDIT - Found a stash of eggs on a leaf of the Anubias!!! The male guards the eggs when the female goes off to eat then she comes back and he goes off.
Discusguru
Cut the leaf and put it in a small tank, container....... Get the water from the com tank. Put a heater and an airstone or sponge filter in and wait for them to hatch. Meantime, fill a ltr of water (coke bottle, small container...) and put a leaf of lettuce in and put out in the sun. Get your microworm culture ready. That way you will have some frys in about 5 days instead of leaving them in the com tank and get nothing in the end. Dave+Amy
Dammit - I've given my 13L cube tank away to Dave's little sister will have to wait until tomorrow after work to visit the petshop to buy another little tank and heater and sponge filter. Fingers crossed that the eggs last that long. The parents aren't egging the eggs so that's a good sign at least and chasing every one away from their corner. Dave+Amy
but I've got nothing to provide air flow over the eggs - wouldn't the eggs die?
Guest
What ones rams bred?
Dave+Amy
the Blue Rams, I've taken a photo of the female still with her breeding tube out - am guessing she did the deed only recently
tracytrout
What about a breeding net hung near water inflow? If you don;t have one you can come round and pick one up from me
Dave+Amy
I thought bigger fish could suck the fry once free swimming out of those nets? I have a fighter isolation hanging thingy but problem being no flow of current
tracytrout
If you're going to the pet shop tomorrow you won't have to worry about that coz the fry won't have hatched yet Good Luck!! Keep us posted please
