Ira
Like the previous 3-4 threads in the last month asking this question, yes it's perfectly fine. May raise your PH a little bit if there's heaps of shell in it, I haven't noticed any sand around that I've seen having any worth worrying about. I think we need to make this a sticky, along with "Is driftwood from the beach ok?"
alanmin4304
It depends a bit on what you want it to be OK for. Some plants and some fish prefer alkaline water so a bit of shell would be good. No good for soft acid conditions.

Caryl
and watch for officers as it is actually illegal to remove sand from beaches Try to get the sand as far above the high tide mark as possible as it will have less shell in it so less likely to affect the pH as much. Cookieskennels
oh wow i didnt realise that it was illegal.... dont like breaking the law :-? and still im going to get some lol. ok thanks for that. um how would i was the salt out? lol
SilverBlade86
You could always buy some builders sand from Bunnings or Mitre 10 or something. Cost me 3 bucks for a huge bag (only used half for my 3footer) because my Dad gets a discount there. It was around 9 bucks full price anyways. Cheesejawa
Beacher sand far finer and less sharp than builders sand. What type of tank is it for? Caryl is there any reason behind the law?
Caryl
I think it is part of the "if everyone took sand we wouldn't have any left would we?" theory. I might be wrong but I am pretty sure it is illegal on all NZ beaches.
supasi
the reason it illegal to take sand without a permit is to stop people loading up trailer loads that can be damaging to the natural landscape. Alterations to natural sand hills can cause erosion and sand shifting. Mind you most councils would not go very far in prosecuting for removal of amounds required for the average fishtank, but if theres one rule for one and not the other, where should they draw the line? So it all "illegal"
go4itgirl
Yes it is illegal to remove sand from all beaches unless you have a special permit which usually requires resource consent from the council concerned
Ira
It's only illegal if you get caught.
alanmin4304
Make yourself feel good and buy it from the garden centre. They probably got their sand from the same beach the night before.
georgeous
get a heap of people to run down the beach, into the water, and then back up ther beach, covering themselves in sand, which will stick, all go have a shower with water going into bucket etc. sand will go with water, sink, remove water you have sand
