snake kid
the choice I made was to keep some fire bellied newts rather than axylotyls my dellemia is that I only know the basics of keeping these animals like what to feed and what to look for in chossing one some stuff I would like to know is 1.could some one post a simple tank example 2.about how much water should I keep in there tank 3.would they be suitable to house with frogs 4.about how much is a fair price to pay for one 5.about how many would be good to keep together (hoping two or three) 6. I have a budget of between $150-$250 dollars is this a sutible price to pay for newts and tank if not do'nt worry if not I can go as high as $350 with a bit more saving :bounce: thank you! livingart
tank setup is easy water depth depends on age of newt, gravel, rock or two to allow some land area few plants, moss and bog plants for aesthetic value and climbing on if wanted small pump to create water flow, very slow watch not too strong to stick newt on intake dougstark on here and dantezgirl have posted some photos of setup look back through newt threads on here
alanmin4304
Bubble and squeek in Stanmore Rd have the Japanese fire bellies for sale and you could see examples of how to keep them while you are there. They can be fed on fruit flies and white worms so you would need to get cultures going. Also daphnia and aphids when available.

snake kid
while I was looking a the fire bellied newts I saw the tank that it was in the make was exo terra and the model was PT-2600 the width was 30cms the diameter was 30cms and the height was 30cms I was wondering if this would be suitable to keep two japanese or two chinese or would they need somthing bigger as they grow? because I have recently seen these for sale for $75 and this is well with in my price range as well as being very good looking . alanmin4304
I have two breeding pairs of Japanese in a similar setup that is about 500mm cubed with half water and half land (with a couple of 8 watt lights and a few plants. Most plants don't survive with that low light but I have found that Cardamine lyrata. xmas moss and miniature figs do. You can't sex them at that age but the ratio is about 50/
alanmin4304
When you have been in the fish game for a couple of weeks like I have you will learn that if you have a number of fish, newts, turtles etc you can sell a lot more to the shops than privately. If you sell them to the shops at a certain price then to private individuals at the same price the shops stop buying from you. I have made the choice to sell to this shop and their mark up is a lot fairer than many other shops. I paid $100 each (at Pet World) for mine at the same size when I bought them. That is the price at the moment and if there gets to be a lot more around no doubt the price will drop. You can buy them now or wait and hope the price drops (or rises). That is the nature of life. snake kid
I did not think that the price was unfair I just had seen them for sale for a lot less and was annoyed that I might get ripped of for price as this has happened to me with many other animals like at animates I paid $95 for a cockatiel that I was told was hand reared but had really been an avairy raised bird that had little or no contact with humans

Insect Direct
in shops your doing well if you find them and your doing even better if under $80 each on tm you see young around summer time for $40 upwards generally breeding pairs $300 + so pays to buy young great pets fully recomended to all
tuatara
If you want birds , go to a specialist bird shop ie The BIRD BARN , for fish HOLLYWOOD FISH FARM. Last time i was in hollywoods they had newts , i think they were $50 (dont quote me). All shops have rent, wages ,high over heads , have to keep good stock numbers (well should do) , and they are there to make a profit , or they wouldnt be there. Animals like newts for example , are not always available, so if you decide you want to get some , you either buy what is available at the time for the set price , or you wait , and possible miss out or pay more depending on what is going to be available. you might wait and pay less , who knows. Myself i aint a good waiter , if i want it i generally will shop around , but will usually get it within a couple of days. Spending money on gas picking up trade me stuff from all over auckland , i have often paid too much for numerous things(general items not just fish.guinea pigs, mice(beardie food) ect. My advice is if the newts (or any animal) look healthy and are eating well , is more important than price. Cheap stock that dies is false economy .
