supasi
Hi all reptile keepers. I have been thinking alot this weekend while out fishing and are seriously thinking about getting a reptile. Can any of you suggest a good site or place i can find info on keeping them. Like enclosure sizes and types, foods, maintanance and general care of lizards in nz. cheers in advance
broms2
I personally would say bearded dragon out of the two you have mentioned, I keep a beardie and from what I have read on the forum and other sites w/dragons arent as friendly as well as growing bigger and needing a descent pond in their enclosure, there are many reptile keepers on the forum that keep both that would be able to compare better than me so hopefully they also reply. As for info beardies - the bearded dragon manual - is a great book and search google - there are heaps of sites also dont forget blue tongue skinks - easy to keep for your first reptile good luck and be careful - you can never stop at just one once you start!!! repto
I`m with broms, water d`s are flighty as and although you could handle them alot to improve this a beardie is mostly friendly from the start, put it another way I have never been biten by a beardy but have more than once by a water d.To my way of thinking handling them alot to make them the way you want them to be is not a good as letting them live a more natural life in a decent sized outdoor enclosure. They do get over the flightyness as they get a bit of size on them and realise they are not a food item to others.best to have look around at setups and see what you really like. supasi
Water Dragons appealed to me as i think they look better(ducks for cover from beardie owners) and seem to be cheaper from what ive seen. Basically can anyone advise what sort of cost im looking at to set up for either. I also own a cat. Would this pose a problem as she would likely sit beside enclosure allday watching, would this be to stressful for a lizard??? Sorry for all the questions. repto
beauty is in the eye of the beholder. They both look good in their own different ways.Beardies are way more personable and user friendly from my experience and the cost of the setup for each should be more or less the same, maybe more for the water d`s if you make them a decent filtered pond system which they should have, otherwise more work with cleaning out the water dish?my beardies don`t have a water dish as such anymore as they never used it other than for a toilet, now they just get misting and fresh greens daily.$300 for a water, $400 for a beardie.the extra $100 is nothing IMO,money well spent.Handle a few before you make your decision. smeauwa
depends what you want! a pet (beardie) or a chalenge(w dragon)?????
livingart
water dragons are not really more of a challenge if you get them young and handle a lot beardie will sit on you and if startle not run off fast water dragons startle easier and move like the wind call them jesus lizards in some parts as they reckon they can walk on water they move that fast if you want a pet like smeauwa says get the beardie i can let beardie sit on me during our public lizard encounters but i always maintain a grip on the waters
