tinytawnykitten
My son has an 80l tank in his room and he is desperate to have frogs and fish in there. Is that at all possible? To have a tank with a deep area for fish and tadpoles and somewhere for frogs to be too? What type of frogs or tadpoles would work? Would you have to have coldwater fish or are there tropical frogs in New Zealand?
bdspider
If you have them in the same area tank, they will eat each other.
ryanjury
Im sure you could get away with tree frogs and WCMM?
shadowfax
& make sure the frogs are about the same size or the bigger ones will try & eat the smaller ones.

tinytawnykitten
Thanks for that. BD Spider, I LOVE your quote at the bottom of your post. I am one of those people who would rather send someone 3 text messages in a row than try and condense what I'm saying into one message with words like 'da' and '2moro'. evil_elmo
Were they tree frogs or the big ones? they were adult bell frogs
ryanjury
That would be why Im talking about whistling tree frogs which are about 2cm's and I doubt they would fit a WCMM in their mouth's however ive never tried it, and frogs always amaze me with what they can eat.. spoon
bell frogs are a lot easier to keep than whisling tree frogs and are a bit more robust with children(frogs shouldnt be handled unless necessary and only with wet hands , also u should wash ur hands afterwards as they carry salmonella) u could get away with large goldfish or paradise fish. my frogs wont touch ane fish even minnows but as a rule of thumb they will eat anething thats able to fit in their mouth and they open wide (1 of my frogs ate a large green cicada) if u want to keep fish in there as well dont buy an exoterra tank as it is NOT deep enuff to keep fish bigger than minows in . with ur 80l tank u could get a piece of glass or acylic siliconed in the middle so half ur tank is water and u could place peat , gravel,or seedraising mix(not potting mix as this has toxic fertilisers in it) on the other side maybe plant a few baby houseplants in it, another idea is to get a piece of acrylic cut to the size of the top of ur tank then cut a large wavy hole in it, cover in fake grass(like carpet stuff) and silicone in at 3/4 the height of ur tankhave a few gap between this and the water with a similarly contructed ramp going down into the water (also grat 4 turtles) be wary with tadpoles they may be better off in a separate tank until larger frogs as fish will eat them as well as larger frogs also sometimes a large tadpole will eat a smaller sized frog. the other reason is feeding them is already a difficult job once they have left the water doin it in a bigger tank spreads the problem out more, i.e. wingless friutflys
carla
they were adult bell frogs Have you actually seen them eating a fish under water? Cause I always thought they need to eat things above water once they are fully fledged frogs. I have hundreds of green bell frogs and heaps of minnows and other fish, so would be interested to hear more about that.
spoon
i have never seen frogs eat things underwater apart from worms but i have seen large tadpoles eat small frogs and frogs eat frogs, i have heard of them eating fish and such but i think its more of a just in case thing u wouldnt want ur frog to eat an expensive fish would u? shadowfax
my larger frog drags the smaller one into the water by the leg to try & eat it.
carla
You wouldn't happen to have any spare would you Unfortunately I am in no state to catch hopping froglets, however there are some bloated tadpoles still around with little legs. I could catch some of them and put them into my backpack and drag them to town if you like.

Ant N
I had a frog tank I made, we raised Adults from tadpoles and had loads of White Clouds breeding, the frogs seemed to ignore the fish. I thought goldfish will eat frogs eegs and attack tadpoles also male frogs will try to ride larger goldfish! You know how males are!LOL Depth of water was only about 125mm with a small internal canister lying on its side. Worked well.
