becc4
Hi everyone. I have somehow got GBA in one of my smaller tanks. Does anyone have a magic way to get rid of it? Any advice would be appreciated.
Ira
Erythromycin
alanmin4304
It will probably also kill the bacteria in the filter so watch that you may have to recycle the tank.
Ira
Except AFAIK noone that's actually used it has ever noticed any ammonia or nitrite spikes. I didn't when I used it.

becc4
Thanks everyone. I have syphoned out as much as I could without doing a 100% water change. I will do the blackout method while I try and source the medication. Anyone in BOP able to give me the name of an aquatic friendly vet who sells the requires meds? Cheers

Caryl
I believe the bacteria in the filter is not affected by Erythromycin. I never noticed any problems when I used it.
alanmin4304
I have used it before without problems but recently lost a tank of fish after using it. I would suggest keeping an eye on it is all.
becc4
To be on the safe side I might just use some water and filter media from one of my other unaffected tanks. Although the suspect tank only have a few guppy and 3 dwarf cichlids in it.
michael.qian
I would stay away from chemicals as well, natural methods should do the trick, lights out, large water changes etc... don't know if any fish will eat blue-green algae though. alanmin4304
The tank I had problems with was cured of blue green but about 20 female killies died over the next 2 weeks and showed signs of gill stress as you would expect from too much ammonia. After they died and were removed I did heaps of water changes over the next few weeks then got a heap of blue/green back. I suspect this was lack of nitrogen because of no fish. Have started adding fish back and fish are OK and blue/green is diminishing. It is all about getting the right balance. If you kill it with antibiotics but don't fix the imbalance you will get it straight back again.
Ira
I didn't make any changes at all after dosing the E. No fish losses, no notiable damage to the biofilter and the cyano has never come back.
