The Great White Hand
Hi Guys I've got some of the trumpet snails in my tank (Piggybacked in on plants to start with and population growing as a result of overfeeding as growing out Discus). What is your favourite/most effective/most efficient snail catching method? I don't want to put dwarf loaches (or any other loach) in as they don't fit with my tank theme. Thank you in anticipation! Raven1
I have just purchased a snail trap, it is working very well so far. You just put an algae tablet in, leave overnight and remove complete with snails in the morning. The snail population has been greatly reduced. Warren
I've heard it works but never tried it - put a lettuce leaf at the bottom of the tank just before you turn the lights out. Give it a few hours, checking regularly with a torch and when the leaf is full of snails, remove it and destroy them. Keep going until all snails are gone (or under control). Raven1
What brand of snail trap is it? How much are they? The brand is JBL and it cost $24.50.
FuglyDragon
I have snail traps available for $20 http://mikesaquatics.co.nz/shopdisplayp ... =yes&bc=no They work well. Putting any form of bottom food on a clear patch of gravel (courgette, sinking discs, lettuce etc) then syphoning out the gathering snails every 30 mins or so (after lights out of course) also works well. Best snail control I know of are botia loaches though they do an excellent job in my stock / breeding tanks. I keep them in groups of 4 - 6 and just cycle them through the tanks every couple of weeks.
purplecatfish
The JBL snail trap worked well for me. (It's also good for catching bristlenoses).
SNOWKIWI
I made a home made trap out of an old container that is like a very small plant pot, It came from the bottom of one of the plants that I bought when I was setting up a planted tank. It is about 50mm high and about 30mm in diameter, and has cut outs for the plant roots about 10mm square. I found an old lid that from a sauce bottle that sort of pressed on, put in a bit of cucumber and left it in the bottom of the tank over night. Next morning I just removed it shook it in the kitchen tidy, rebaited the trap and put it back in again. Over the space of about a week I must have trapped about a thousand of the annoying little suckers!!! Cheap and effective I reckon.
