ctsniper86
Hi, i've been reading the keeping NZ fish thread and it sound really easy to set one up. Is it really as easy as it sounds? I was always told if it sounds too good to be true it usually isn't.

ctsniper86
Well i've read that you can just go get sea water and rocks etc from the local rock pools and all you need is a filter.
Ianab
Yeah.. basically. You still need to do water changes like normal, with sea water. Top ups with fresh water. You also need to watch how warm the tank gets in summer, but rock pool species are pretty hardy. Cheers Ian P.S. Dont get any of those red rock crabs - well unless you only want one big red crab in your tank Dont ask how I know this

ctsniper86
well thats extremely handy, I think I might have to see if i cann set one up this weekend. Its not so hard for me to do, the beach and rock pools are basically on the back doorstep.
Caryl
Very easy. Biggest problem is keeping it cool over summer - well it is here anyway
wasp
Yes i once had one, cheap as cos the stuff is all free and it looked pretty cool. Although it got a bit messy after perhaps a year or so cos I should have invested in a skimmer but didn't. I think you can do one easily and cheaply, but if you want to go all the way you spend more money and get good equipment, same as a tropical tank, and the tank will be even better. Great excuse to take the family rock pooling, my kids loved it, and had their own little pets in the tank that they had caught themselves. Ira
Biggest thing is you'll probably need a chiller, which isn't cheap.

Whiskas
Just been to Lady Elliott Island (snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef) and learnt that sea slugs are good filters. They suck in the dirty sand and then poop out the clean sand. They are from the same family as sea stars (starfish) and sea urchins. Dunno how they do in tanks but if someone wants to give it a go... Ira
I believe you're referring to sea cucumbers, not sea slugs AKA nudibranchs.
Whiskas
yep they the one, sea cucumbers realised what i had written and thought d'oh
coelacanth
sea cucumbers are easy to keep (depending on species, but seeing they're local if they don't work out then just release them again), the difficulty with them is that they don't move much and if they die and you don't realise then it causes a small problem..... coelacanth
and as for nudibranchs (sea slugs), avoid them. They are awesome critters but very few can be kept successfully because they generally feed on very specific things which can't be provided easily in an aquarium.
