Nicolette
No idea when or who or how.... But I was just putting 2 new siamese algae eaters in my tank when I saw 2 6mm long baby glowlight tetras in the tank. What do I do now? They have a little colour so I assume they are at least 2 weeks old and had survived my rigourous water changes. Are they ok with my algae eaters and catfish or even the other tetras as all the other fish seem really interested in them. What do I feed them? Should I stick them in a breeding tank or leave them in the community tank? How on earth did I manage to not notice the little blighters till now... Advice please...... I think I may have posted this in the wrong place... can someone move it to breeding... I was excited and not thinking straight.... Gawd I am such a newbie. Afrikan
I would definately shift them or at least put them in a breeding trap if you don't have anything set up... they could become lunch for something that takes them by surprise..... anyway congrats
Nicolette
thanks Afrikan... This is much more exciting than watching the rugby.
Afrikan
I bet it is! Would have been a nice surprise to spot the little critters! 8) Brine shrimp is good, very finely crushed flake... keep us posted 8)
Luke*
Well done Nicolette. I agree with Afrikan. Congrats. It's fun breeding glowlights :bounce:
fievels007
He he, I'm sitting staring into the tank while my partner watches the rugby! Deifinately more interesting in the tank! I'm willing my Blue Rams to breed! Last time they eggs disappeared over night. Congrats on your fry... I'm still an overly eager grandma just waiting waiting waiting! Nicolette
Good luck with the blue rams. I have managed to get the little critters into a breeding trap thats floating in the tank as we speak. My 12yr old and 9yr old would not have gone to sleep had I not made sure they were safe...lol
Nicolette
Here is a photo of the wee guys... size is deceptive but around 6 to 10mm long... Anyone want to guess how old they are? This is the trap in the tank... and the tank.. I really need to figure out how to take better photos of the tank...lol
Luke*
2.5 months
Nicolette
lol...I dont think so. The tank was newly established 6 weeks ago. I have just finished cycling.
cichlid7
they would be about 4-5weeks old at that size
caserole
Yep, colour starts to show in glowlights after 4 weeks depending in there diet.
purplecatfish
I'm guessing that the move to the new tank induce the tetras to spawn. And if the fry have survived for that long they've learnt how to avoid the neons. They could be returned to the tank since there's enough plants cover for them to hide in. What do others think? Nicolette
wow 4 weeks.. they certainly must be hardy fish to have survived in that invironment. What about the SAE... Do they eat small fry? (yes i know its a daft question as they are algae eaters but I gotta ask) Thanks again all for your help.
cichlid7
i think you would have more trouble with bristlenoses than SAE
Nicolette
oh really?! are catfish a threat to them...he is only 3cm long my catfish
cichlid7
at that size the glowlights will be fine my pair were in with about 60 kribs about 10mm long in the morning when i looked i thought there were less there were only about
Adrienne
You still might find another one or two fry in your tank depending on their size and if there are hiding places in your tank. I found 3 guppy fry in my tank this week - only had the mother for less than two weeks, the next morning there were 4. They were about 4 days old. caserole
If you really want the fry to survive I'd keep them in the net for another month. Give them as much bbs as they will eat and they will grow fast.
Nicolette
err...what is bbs? I have Novo Tom Artema powder for them.. http://www.jbl.de/factmanager/frame_page.php?action=show&PageMode=2&IdType=2&Id=38 LFS said this was the stuff to use. I am going to set the fry up in an established breeding tank I have, to grow up for a while before I put them back in the community tank.
