Milet
Hello everyone!! I've been thinking about what to put into my 4foot tank and i thought id start up an Amazon Tank. I'm going to transfer my Pair of Angels, Two Green Severums, Plecos and a few Bristlenoses into the tank (assuming they are all from the amazon??? :-?) What other sorts of fish would also suit this tank? And What plants could i use? DOes Anyone have any pointers for me on what else to put in it and how to set it up like the amazon? or good websites? Thanks heaps!

lduncan
Plant wise, Echinodorus sp. seem to be some of the most available South American plants in NZ.
David R
Forget about the plants and get some uarus!!! One of the best SA cichlids IMO, no biotope tank would be complete without them! Some cool pleco's, pictus and raphael catfish will finish it off nicely.
Loopy
i think your tank could look good with a few silver dollars. But it does depend on the tank. dollars need a long tank to swim in. and comfort in numbers.
sharn
you could have issues with plants, my sev eats and pulls out plants plants, so does my plec and geos like to dig. however- well rooted swords are a pain in the bum for humans to get out so if the plant had time to spread out its roots it would stand a better chance. just a thought
shadowfax
pictus wreck plants too
smidey
its a pihrana look at those gorgeous teeth- could compete with my puffers with teeth like that i thought piranhas were elegal in NZ, pacus would be the other option as look alikes

David R
here's a link to freshwests amazon thread of a while ago. this is the benchmark of amazon tanks, good luck matching it! IMO thats not really an amazon tank, its just a planted tank with amazon fish in it (although still very impressive and beautiful!). Here's some habitat pics that might give you some ideas. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ ... Water1.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k186/ ... Afrikan
Here is an interesting read... http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0602.htm I don't think there is any one certain type of tank that has to be classed as "Amazon", I would think it clearly goes by what region you are wanting to base your tank on and go from there... GZ_Loach
silk plants would be the best option if you have cichlids in the tank, make sure you arrange the tank before the piranhas go in
Afrikan
I have kept and do keep plants with certain cichlids, not all cichlids are a nuisance with plants
davidb
a proper amazon biotope shouldn't have plants imo.
SpidersWeb
What about Amazon Swords etc? Surely there are plants available for an Amazon Biotope?
meesheelly
http://fish.mongabay.com/biotope.htm Theres different types. EG the blackwater, clearwater and white water
davidb
swords and val are ok but often grow emerged rather than submerged. it really depends on which amazon biotope you are going for: amazon oxbow lake biotope aquarium- dominated by bladderwort and floating plants like Eichhornia. also present are val and swords but not many amazon stream biotope aquarium- few plants. in unshaded areas val and swords grow but nothing really grows in the shaded areas.
