Milet
Found a small crack in bottom of tank i bought off trademe, think it leaks very slowly but could leak faster when layerd with stones etc. Can i just coat it with some sort of silicone or glue? Rather than laying another sheet of glass down as i have spent too much money this week and needmy tank up and running ASAP
Gannet
you could put a small sheet of glass over the creak and then silicon it up, but i would get a new bottom

Wok
put the tank that has the crack in the bathtub. That way you won't have any problems with water going everywhere
Milet
lol funny guy wok Any serious suggestions?
Milet
the crack is only about 9cm long....may have been caused by hot water  DOH!
Alan
Is the crack running across a corner or does it run and then stop in the middle of the sheet?? Wok
Milet
The crack starts a few cm's above a corner and go's in towards the centre for about 6 cm's
Alan
Then you are in the poo It will keep running to an edge. You may get away with gluing a patch over it; don't need to do the whole base. But future stresses my cause it to continue running then leak. Is that the one you paid $12 for?? If so they said it doesn't leak. Did you pour in the boiling water?? Woks idea doesn't seem so stupid now does it??
Milet
Thanks alan. So what would you do? Flag it or attempt to patch it?
Wok
cut the cracked bottom off and replace it with a new piece of glass
Faran
I had the exact same thing happen and tried fixing it by patching glass below and above the original sheet. Long story short, I have a tank with 30cm of glass on the bottom and is twice as heavy (empty) as any of my other tanks the same size. Replacing the entire bottom is neater, easier and less trouble. jim r
What size tank is it?
Ira
Probably what you'd need to do if you don't want to remove the base(Which would be the proper way) is carefully drill the end of the crack, probably about half the depth of the glass should do. That would keep the crack from spreading. Then put a patch over it.
Alan
Or push down on the end of the crack and let it run it's course to an edge then patch it. The patch is ALWAYS done on the inside, with a good run of glue around the patch and one over the crack. Well that's how I have done them, and I have even done them under water.
