Brianemone
OK, so i need to get serious about choosing the plants that i want in the final tank scape. I'm going to have a lawn effect but can't decide if i want harigrass or the broader type grass looking plant (i'm pretty bad with plant names) CHeck out this tank, it probably the most effective use of lawnage ever. Im guessing this is non dwarf hairgrass??? Also does anyone know the name of the long slender leaved plant that is by the wood? It looks almost crypt like
evilknieval69
Use hairgrass, its awesome once it forms a big carpet. for example check out antwans old tank. He had a mean carpet and it looked wicked. Im not sure what that plant is as i cant see it properly but it could be crypt balansae if its crypt like and long... they are quite nice plants. alanmin4304
Most of the hairgrass available is quite long. You can also use Echinodrus tenellus, Sagittaria microfolia, Hydrocotyle verticulata or glossostigma elatinoides.
Fishkeepa
Ide say that slender leaved plant going by the list at the bottom is Narrow leaved java fern.
alanmin4304
I would think it is Philippine Java fern (Microsorum pteropus " Philippine") rather than the narrow leafed one. Both are nice plants.
Brianemone
The guy does list java fern as one of his plants so as you say alan it probably is. I'm pretty sure i've heard dwarf hairgrass mentioned is it common???
alanmin4304
I think it is around but I haven't seen it for a while. There have been people on here looking for it and I am not sure if they have had any success. There is a fine tenellus about which looks similar (Pupuke Aquariums have it)
Brianemone
Tenellus is the grass type plant that propagates using runners right??? A while ago i tried what i think was a tenellus species and it didnt form a very thick growth.
alanmin4304
There are a number of types (I have 3). Pupuke (and plantman I think) have the fine one tenellus tenellus which propagates pretty readily.
quack
Use hairgrass, its awesome once it forms a big carpet. for example check out antwans old tank so what is the scientific name for this? or does anyone have any that they would sell/swap one of the lfs has "hairgrass" but isnt the same as what antwan had. evilknieval69
one of the lfs has "hairgrass" but isnt the same as what antwan had. LFS 'hairgrass' is usually much taller as it has been grown emerse.
quack
nah its been in there tank a while now, its much taller and a different colour too.

alanmin4304
I personally think tenellus tenellus would look better than the tall hair grass. I haven't seen the short stuff in years. I had a bit hear that came with another plant and I ended up throwing it out as it grew to about 150mm. Sagittaria microfolia would be even shorter at 25-30mm
Brianemone
Yeah alan i think your right about the tall hair grass. If i can't find the dwarf stuff but googling some pics it seems that E. tenellus can form a decent looking carpet.
me love fishy
If you have a lowlight set up don't bother getting hairgrass as it won't grow very well in my experience.
