shadowfax
i just put another one on my tank so i have 1 at each end & 1 reads 26 & the other is 28, does anyone else use more than 1 thermometer & have different readings at each end? i use the stick on ones & just put a glass one inside the tank to check if they are accurate & they are. Ira
The stick on ones are crap. Don't even bother with them. Just use a glass one in the tank, they only cost a buck or two more.
jude
the position of the heater could be affecting it, or the temperature of the surrounding air, or water movement perhaps? I've always thought it would be interesting to have a very long tank with the temp at 28 at one end and lowering to 22 at the other. It would be fascinating to see if the fish tended to stay in the area where the temp was the most comfortable for them. Cheers Jude
SNOWKIWI
I dont have more than one thermometer on each tank, but have experimented with a digital one that I have on one of my tanks. I moved the sensor around to different places in the tank, and got slightly different readings at each place. I assumed it was to do with the positioning of the heater, and the filter pump inlet and outlet. It wasn't too much different, so I wasn't too worried. I guess you get a bit of thermal layering as the water when heated will move upwards, and as the water cools it moves downward to the bottom of the tank. Also, there is a difference in reading between the digital one and the fixed one that I have.
evilknieval69
Most of my tanks dont even have thermometers anymore, Just by putting your finger in the water a little bit you can figure out if somethings wrong. I dont worry about temp much because fish can handle a quite big range of temps, as long as they are slow changes....
Caryl
Shadowfax, if you put the thermometers beside each other do they still read 2 degrees different?
Freakyfish
Most of my tanks dont even have thermometers anymore, Just by putting your finger in the water a little bit you can figure out if somethings wrong Do you realise if your going from a colder enviroment to a warmer one that difference will seem alot more to your body On a cold day your tanks will seem alot warmer then usual and the opposite on warm days Also the stick on thermometers are affected by glass temp not only water I would reccomened a Glass thermometer for every tank they are only cheap virtually all are reliable
shadowfax
i can feel the difference in temp between the ends, i just did my weekly water change & noticed it. also my smaller tank thats sitting on 26 feels hotter than the my large tank even tho the temp on that one is higher. just going to chuck the glass one in the smaller tank. sharn
i put most of my heaters near the bottom if possible (probes or the glass ones) because thats where the coldest water is going to be, i have found with good water movement i dont get much of a difference. On a cold day your tanks will seem alot warmer then usual i love putting my face against a 30C tank in winter when its 0C outside
SpidersWeb
One of my glass thermometers disagrees with every other therm. I have by 3 degrees, I was disgusted with the absolute lack of quality, you just cant trust them. This wasn't cheap versions either, I got the best I could find in Animates. In order to get a rough idea of temp, and to compare temperatures (e.g. bucket temp vs new tank temp) I use a digital, brand is Aqua something, cost me $12, pack advertises +/- 1 deg accuracy which is apparently a lot higher than the gimmick glass/stick-ons measure. Only ever use the stick-on or glass internals as a guide to make sure your heaters haven't blown or something. If you want to compare the temp difference between each side, you must move a single thermometer, not compare two different meters. Sorry for the ramble, it just really angers me as temp is quite important, and none of the packs read 'looks just like a real thermometer!'. sharn
i am gonna get one of those people thermometers (the ones with the red stuff in them, alcohol?) from the chemist and that way i can test the tanks and work out how far off my digital thermoms are (the aqua one ones with probes, not those bad stick on ones). the people ones should be pretty close to correct right? SpidersWeb
A friend of mine recommends using those baby thermometers for comparison, buy 3 digitals, find which is the most accurate and take back the other two as on average 1/3 is pretty close, but they only vary by a degree or so. Alan
Watch out for those ppl ones. Some don't read the range where we have out tanks. You can get them on TM actually. Another good trick is if you get them from the LFS, get a bunch of them and check their temps, sometimes there is as much as 10o out, look for the average temp and get those. I always test mine with a Dairy thermometer or a Home-brew one. Alan
shadowfax
i have the stick on ones down the bottom of the tank & my glass one was reading 28 with the stick on & i put it down the other end & it read 27 & the stick on was 26, put the glass one in my other tank & it reads 26 & the stick on 25. may have to invest in a better thermometer! sharn
those stick on ones get influenced by the room temps, sunlight on them etc so that may be why youre seeing the large changes?
