malawiman
Hi all I've build this tank and thought I would share it with you. I got the glass cut at the local shop and assembled it. Hope it will work, made small ones before without problems. If anyone makes tanks I can use some input with finishing off. Tank is 1400x500x450. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0244.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0245.jpg Cheers
Lucid
Tank looks good malawiman, don't have any tips as only made a 3 foot tank before and that is the largest I would trust myself to make. Ballistic Senior
malawiman
Thanks Ballistic. Will let you know how it went when I fill it up for test.
fishboi
looks good but is it worth the hassle and risk? how much are the Glass
evilknieval69
looks good but is it worth the hassle and risk? how much are the Glass Yea i agree with you there. I wouldnt bother making a tank over 2-3 foot, and i would only make one of them if i had the glass hanging around... Much easier and safer to get greg to make it  I have made a 3 foot tank before with my mate, and that is still running, but i personally wouldnt go any bigger... Smaller tanks are easy to make, and i usually have the glass just sitting around anyways
malawiman
I agree, I got the glass for free and had it cut to size. It cost me $40 so if it does not work it's not a great loss. I've made a 4 foot before and that is still in use, no problems. The next thing will be the stand and hood.
evilknieval69
Ohk sweet deal. Fair enough for that kind of money then... Well done. it does look like a nice sturdy tank with that bracing etc..... Hope it works out alright

Alan
I would have had straps on each end as well. All straps would have been UNDER the side runners. Good effort tho. Alan
alanmin4304
It is only a matter of personal preference but I put the top straps right around and about 10 mm down from the top then use a polycarb lid as it does less damage if you drop it and the lid fits flush with the top. I also leave a small gap between the back and end straps to allow access for air hoses / wires etc. Only personal preference, great tank. Try putting mirrors around the back and ends and then put in lots of plants---it will look like the botanical gardens.
malawiman
Thanks for your input, I might change the straps or put some more at the ends.
alextret
It could probably be relevant to both home-made and ready-made tanks, but does it make sense to somehow fit a tank with isolation material to save power bill?
sharn
yes, many people put sheets of poly cut to fit around the back and sides of their tanks

alextret
Thank you very much, I'll try Payless Plastics etc. How would people attach them? With sticky tape?
alanmin4304
I get mine from the local hardware store by asking for the cover sheets the last two have been 2400 x 1200 x50 and cost $10 and $5 depending on who was having a good day. Caryl
You can use tape or, if the tank is close enough to the wall just sit the poly behind it. If it is for under the tank of course, no attaching is required.

Dasher
big hardware stores like "mitre 10" or plastic places like "payless plastics" Go to Plaster Systems for big sheets - as they use them on Insulclad homes. Payless and Plastic box generally only have the 100mm Thick or thicker sheets (I went in to local ones a few weeks back).

sharn
oh shush you  just cause you live in a country that always seems to want to fry its occupants with heat  i was reading about some aussies that dont even have to heat their tap water in summer cause it comes out so warm definatly a good power bill saver if you hardly ever have to use heaters
