    Hello

Oh jeepers...I'm sorry I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. I wasn't saying that New Zealanders were "Aussies". I was just wondering if the accents were similar. I certainly know that different places different accents. Heck, my accent can be different from someone living a hundred miles from me or next door for that matter    Caper

Sorry I don't know anything about bettas except their beauty! However, I have dealt with white spot. I can't really see in the picture. But white spot looks like someone took a salt shaker to your fish...hope that helps? Caper
  7. I'm really really terrible with the metric system   (never liked it!) so I'm not sure the size of your tank. But goldfish as they grow do need big tanks. Anyway, so you need a filter, good idea to get test kit. If the tank is too small and they are producing a lot of waste, the test kit will help you to gauge the need for water changes. You wouldn't need a heater probably but do you have a thermometer? From what I've seen here, your summers can get reallly hot. If the tank is too small, it will heat much faster. Hmmm...what else people? Caper
  8. kd123, I believe what you mean in terms of what betta's do (I guess other types too :-? P) that is called flaring, don't know if I spelled it right though  where as flashing is "scratching" their bodies against something. Well, I did the big water change so I'm hoping it was the ammonia being up a bit that was causing the problem then I can fix it with water changes. I'll keep testing for a few days and more water changes if needed. Are you experiencing your fish flashing now? What kind? Anything visible on them such as white spots? Caper
  9. A self contained ecosytem...how about sealed DEATH TRAP   They said he must of known something about fish keeping because some of the terms he used! WELL, even before I started keeping fish I would have known how stupid and cruel that is    Caper

    Hello all.

Seeing the same as the rest...no tank! Caper
  16. Thanks for the replies folks kd123 wrote: Flashing (a.k.a. scratching) against the gravel, ornaments, rocks, whatever. So yes jolliolli, that is what they are doing and some of above. I did just what you said Conch tested the water. Didn't get to check it the last 2 days because it was dark & I find it easier to see the test results in daylight. Anyway, pH between 7.4 & 7.6, nitrate b/w 10 & 20, AMMONIA - b/w .25 & .5 (I find it difficult to tell unless they are dead on so that's why I say between  ). So needless to say I did what you said a big water change. So, I'm thinking I'm overfeeding because I have been doing weekly water (on rare occasion may go to 2 weeks, but that is rare) changes. I've always fed my fishies twice a day with the exception of Sunday they don't get fed. But I'm also wondering, I always used to take out 3 buckets of water unless for some reason a larger change was needed. I have 2 tanks 29 gallons, 1 tank 10 gallon (only one bucket/change). Anway, never paid attention just how low the water became in the tanks. But now, I'm using the vac that connects to the faucet for the 29 gallons. So what do you recommend how I measure what I'm taking out, just an estimate? Caper
  17. You don't need to take the fish out when doing water changes. The only time I've taken fish out of the tanks if the tanks were being moved, or the fish themselves. I know in some cases people have had to do a major cleaning and had to move fish to temporary homes. But for regular water changes, you do not have to take fish out. Tanks need to go through the cycle process, google or search here to get the details on that (sorry I know I've read other posts of yours but can't think of hand what you have). Goldfish need to have a filtered tank as well, to well obviously filter the water and to house the "good" bacteria that is needed to help maintain a healthy tank. Okay other wise fishy people what else do we need to help her! Caper
  18. Rufus..you are funny    Caper
  19. Goldfish are generally a hardy fish. How small was the "round" tank and was it a tank or a bowl? Did you have a filter? Did you do water changes? Never heard of "dissolving shells for oxygen", what is that? Were the 2 goldies the only fish in the tank/bowl? Caper
  20. Sorry no help! Other than the blue on the cory's, are they showing any signs of illness?? I'd keep up with the water changes for sure. Would it be too late for you take the ornament back to the store? I would just want them to know what has happened. But then I would also want to email the company that made it to tell them and ask them what should be done for the poor fishies  But wow, I thought all aquarium items were fish friendly. First time I've heard of the paint coming off, has anyone else experienced this, interesting to know? Caper
  21. 2 things impressed me: 1) the tank wow 2) that you was so nice to see you thanking your Mom, way to go! Caper
  22. I agree with that Jim. I've also found red eye tetras to be hardy. But then, gosh knows where the fish here are coming from!  Caper
  23. Sorry I did say a good scrub should do, but following in other footstep here I did boil mine. First time I had real rocks in a tank Caper
