    New Tank

Darn...piece is broken that holds the light in the hood...so will have to take back tomorrow (stores not open here on Sunday). I'm going to put the filter on and heater in though...do I need to cover the tank with something? I'll have the hood tomorrow hopefully! It is okay I hope to put the heater in and filter on without hood...right :-? ? Sorry another question...are you folks ready to kick me out of here yet  The heater that came with the tank ia 100 watt...but was just reading the side and it states "ideal for aquariums up to 25 gallons"...yet this is 29 gallons. But according to the chart on the side the next one would be a 200 watt "ideal for 50 gallons". So would it be correct to assume that the 100 watt will be sufficient since it would seem that 200 would be too much...want to keep fish alive and well, not cooked

    Hi

Hello GeeTee and welcome! Being a newbie...I can tell you this place is awesome, so much information...and the people are always eager and willing to help! Take care...and good luck with the new tank
  4. Thank you suphew & Bill Okay...did water change yesterday, normally do on Mondays but had to move tank   Didn't think to test first, anyway tested this morning and here's the results: ammonia - 0 pH - not quite 7, but more towards 7 then 7.2 (I must drive you guys nuts) nitrite - not quite .1 but more towards that then the .3 suphew I'm terrible at this stuff so I'll try to explain the test kits, please forgive if I'm not explaining good enough:( For testing the ammonia: test is mg/L at top of scale...it has 0 ppm (mg/L) then goes on to .25, .5, etc. Nitrite: on box "(0.0-3.3 mg/L) test" Since there is no 0 on the scale that means the water would be clear, do you think?? The scale starts at .1, .3, .8, etc. So I should be aiming for 0 nitrites which I'm assuming would be clear water in tube?? I'm sorry guys if I'm not explaining this very good. Once the fish are in separate tanks, and Sam has 1? 2? new goldfish with him, I think I will increase the water changes to weekly not every second week. I've done a water change last week and this week, do you think that maybe that's why the nitrites are down some??? Sorry so long!!! About the feeding...I feed twice a day as I was told by the pet store. Now, I know there are many opinions on this, some I have read here. So, like you said suphew I should probably try reducing the feeding. Okay...weekly water changes...reduce feeding...which should come first...the chicken or the egg, oh shoot...wrong story or should I do both??? THANK YOU

    New Tank

Thanks misnoma I've sat on the tank there is a "lip" on the top and it sat right on it. It does fit just fine but... I don't know, I'll call the toll free number Monday for customer service to see what they say. It sits on it just fine, so should be okay, do you think???? Hi Shelley! Thanks, I am excited...new tank is not as big as I would have liked but unless I start throwing out furniture...hmmm....you never know it has to do for now. Just started to set it up yesterday so Sam is still sharing "his" tank with the others. My son was out last night so I have to wait for him to get up to knock out the holes in hood to put on heater and filter. The section on the 10 gallon tank snapped out easily but this one it's solid and I don't know... :-? ...how to break them without breaking the hood. It's plastic, any ideas?

    New Tank

Ummm.... I can't figure out how the hood goes on. It is different than my other tank. In the book that came with it, it shows the corner top of frame with a "notch"...well I've been all around the top of the aquarium...and I do not see a notch, none at all! The directions state, "Place hood in postion on aquarium top, making sure that hood corner pegs line up with frame corner notches. Hood should sit secrely on inside frame ledge. If movement occurs, recheck peg placement." No notches, no pegs. :-? :-? Any ideas?

    New Tank

Sorry more questions? Once I have the tropicals out of the 10 gallon, do I just remove the heater or should I just keep decreasing the temp till it is down to "nothing"? But then like I said, temp has been warm here but don't want to do anything to cause distress to goldfish. Will I need an air pump in the 29 gallon, have one in the 10 but don't want one in the 29 unless you suggest it? I'm going to work on getting the tank setup this weekend in case we get the call to go to Halifax. Oh...I know it won't be ready for the fish though...have to go read...especially the article Alan sent on cycling.

    pH?

CONGRATULATIONS Maxy I'm so glad to hear you're not giving up. You'll be able to do this especially with all they are willing to do here for us newbies...amazing people!
  11. How do I get there... ....  Nothing like that here!
  12. I just use a damp cloth and a dry one to clean off the outside of my tank. I never used anything else as everything I read said not to. Saw glass cleaner for the tank, but much cheaper to use damp cloth
  13. Uh...how can glass be too thin? Was the tank made at a shop as opposed to being bought at a store?

    New Tank

I can't believe the difference the ottos have made. Before I would clean the plants and such...but they are doing it now I tried putting the algae wafers (I think it was 3 times in the week since I've had them) once after awhile I took one out because the ottos weren't interested, only my goldfish. The other 2 times, not sure what happened to them. BUT, I do notice that I have a bit of "brown" looks almost like a sand on the white part of my subtrate and on one of my ornaments. Could this be from "left over" wafers, if they were not eaten? I have to go out shopping for my new tank since I only picked up a couple of artificial plants and rocks because I couldn't really tell what the tank looked like till I got it out of the box! Not sure if I'm going to exchange the rocks for a different color or not. The bag I picked up was mulitcolored. Not much of a variety here. I like the blues, red, and white I have in the 10 gallon but wanted to get something different for the new one. Any suggestions? How would 1 color look? Have to look at pics of your tanks to get ideas. Neighbours don't have real plants either! Oh...another question  The subtrate has some small pieces in it as well, I notice when my goldfish is digging around, he picks some up and just spits it back out...what about the ottos?
  15. WOW what a fish...14"long...OMG beachy...very nice pic...is it acutally considered a fish...the front looks almost like legs :-?

    New Tank

I've only had my 10 gallon since March and always had the heater in it. Snowman, do you have your winter/summer opposite to ours. Our summer is June, July, & August. We've had really miserable summers the last 2 years. But the last 2 days it was 30 so was really concerned about the temp in the tank. I can't wait...but know I have to...to get the new tank set up. I went over to a neighbors tonight, they have a 35 gallon tank. When I asked her how often do you do a water change...usually once a year they give a tank a good scrub down...other than that the only water is what they use to top it up...CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT And they have had the tank for 7 years!

Hi vimmer...greetings from Cape Breton! Being a newbie myself, I can verify that this place is great. People are wonderful to help and have sooooo much knowledge, they are amazing! I have learned so much since I found this site...mind you...I still have lots to learn
  19. Sorry, didn't know where I should post this. I bought a 29 gallon tank tonight No room to put a bigger one...and this was all I could get but at least now I can put my neons & platy in the bigger tank...and have Sam (goldfish) in the 10 gallon with a buddy or 2 once I get the other one set up. The tank holds 110L it is 30" long, 1' wide, and 18 1/2" tall; I know it's not very big but the only choice I had. I wanted to wait but we've been having really warm weather and I'm scared the temp was going to be too much for my goldfish to handle. Question, after I get the new tank set up...do I need to keep a heater in with the goldfish????
  20. Thanks Bill, But if I put mesh over it, won't it get plugged? As I understand, they only get sucked in if they are ill. Not that I want that to happen but I don't want to take a chance on screwing up by putting something over it Bill, I was asking about the nitrites: What do you think? Also, we had a really hot day here today, normally the temp in the tank is 72 and if it is warm, it will go up to 74-76 when I turn the lights on. I just got home from work and the temp is already 74. So, I know if I turn the lights on it will go up probably to 78. Can I leave the lights off? I don't have any real plants in my tank.
  21. Sorry for your troubles...er nightmare plecs...sure hope you day gets better
  22. Maxy, Don't be so hard on yourself...you are trying to do your best. I've seen & read where some poor fish suffer for no other reason than "known" human cruelty. You are learning...just like me...and believe me this is the place to learn. I told you....GREAT...people here and that they'd get you through this. You folks are so eager and willing to help...gee...puts hand on gin...and dreams of winning lotto to go visit this wonderful place Hats off to you all.....
  23. Thanks Caryl & Misnoma misnoma...that's funny, I sometimes watch the fish when they pass through the bubbles from the air pump & I used to think they'd get hurt but sometimes I think they all like it. Yah Caryl...I think I've seen you in a post before as well as others saying neons aren't very hardy. I'm thinking that it was just the fact that they were newest additions so you're probably right the move did them in. Not that I'm glad they get sucked into the filter...but I'm glad to know that it doesn't happen with healthy fish...if you now, what I mean  The nitrites? Reading between .1 & .3 okay?
  24. Thank you Caryl...when I went to do as you said...poor little bugger was dead He as the second of the 2 neons that were bought for me last Thursday...now both are gone I got my other fish on Thurs/Fri before...this is the first time I had one for this amount of time and died. I did a 25% water change last night...was it too soon after getting the new fish? What I did before when I got new fish...was leave the water change go till the next week. The first one died within a day or 2...but this guy seemed to be fine...oh well...joys and sorrows of owning fish ...I bought 2 otto's myself that same day...I hope they make it. I checked my water earlier....meant to do it last night after a couple of hours post water change...but fell asleep. Anyway they are: ammonia 0 pH 7.2 nitrite...I'd say it was between .1 & .3... the first 2 times I checked the nitrites...more towards the .3 According to the book that came with the test kit....3 is supposed to be safe...is this true? Oh...by the way...so if I'm understanding correctly...a healthy fish would not get sucked in???
  25. I just checked tank...couldn't find a neon...to my horror he was tail first in the bottom of the filter...I immediately unplugged the filter and he came out...but not looking good...his still breathing but having a difficult time...and tries to swim. I don't know what to do...I turned the filter back off while posting this...cuz he's too weak & it almost sucked him in again He was fine a while ago...can a healthy fish be sucked in...oh...any ideas what I can do...how long can I leave the filter turned off...the air pump is on...please, please, help!
