I found some today in Hollywood Mt Roskill, made by Nutrafin, $6.25 for 25g, it was the last one so I grabbed it! I'd never seen them before either, but then I hadn't been looking.
-
Kim and other LFSs - have you ever seen in NZ or know if the Sparkling Pygmy Gourami is available here please?
-
Don't know what the difference is but it would be better than nothing, can't kill them surely.
-
This is a bit off subject but I know at least two albino people who can see very well!
-
Cor if you're waiting on NZ Post they'll be dead before then! My baby guppies did very well on the very fine flakes, if you don't have any grind some up in a mortar & pestle or something similar. My platy fry don't get any specific feed at all, they survive on whatever they can find - that is until the Gouramies eat them for dinner!

I put my heater in straight up & down next to the filter outlet and then bring the tubing down the left side of the heater and hook it underneath the suction cup on the heater, that holds it in place so you can just push the tubing down under the gravel where it stays until you forget it's there when you're cleaning the tank! Or in one of my other tanks I have two rubber rings that I fit around the filter outlet, then I run the tubing through these down the back of the filter outlet so you can't see the tubing! The rubber rings where originally sucker caps I think, brought from the LFS, I cut the suction part off which just left the rings!

Geez Ira those are the most awful photos I've ever seen - talk about disgusting! Tell me what I'd need to do to grow some for my fish please? That's if I can stand the thought of worms GROWING in my home! Reminds me of the old days - my mother with a torch in the middle of the night........
-
To stop my babies going up the shute I tied a piece of netting around in the intake - it does collect the dirt and needs to be rinsed out now and then but it saves the babies! I had one of those breeding tanks that was just a plastic frame with netting that fitted over the frame and tied up, I used the netting from that but you could get some from any good fabric shop! If you do that give it a good wash it very hot water to remove the sizing & to soften it. Maybe you could even take apart one of those net bathroom cleaners you can get at your local supermarket!
-
I have two of Kim's Yellow Black-eyed Bristle-noses - would love to have more fancy ones but who can afford the prices, I sure can't!
-
Ah I see, I get the picture now. I didn't mean the females killed him but if he was already dead.....he'd make a good meal wouldn't he?
-
Why couldn't they have eaten him? If he'd jumped out surely you would have found him on the floor or am I missing something here?
-
Sad news Shae, I don't know those fish but the death of any fish is not good. I expect the others would have eaten him, that happens all the time to me - they just disappear into thin air - lost a Silver Shark that way last week, it's a mystery isn't it? You would think that if they were eaten by the other fish there would be some small part of him left somewhere.

Sue - my camera is nothing flash - a Sony cyber-shot 1.3 mega pixels, it's a digital still camera DSC-P20 whatever that means! I take a full chip of photos each time I'm taking some and just keep the ones that come out any good, sometimes only one or two! When you're taking fish you're never sure they're going to turn out to be in focus or not. I don't really like to post too many photos on here but you can see more on my webpages, adding more all the time:- http://photobucket.com/albums/v616/Pandoras-Fish/ http://www.freewebs.com/pandoras-fish/ Alan - have another look at the previous posts, as far as I can see the photos are still there, maybe PhotoBucket was down for a short while last time you were here. Midas - ah so that's why the cichlids are not hiding any longer since the SDs went into the tank.
-
Yes I do Sue - this one is rather unusual of The Boss (Jack Dempsey) And one of the Silver Dollars I could probably bore you all silly with the photos of my fish! There's a totally different one of The Boss in the Off Topic Fishroom, it doesn't look like the same fish:- http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=4554

Yes they're beautiful and about 6cm maybe a bit longer I would say. Unfortunately all the pictures were too dark and didn't come up well at all, it's a shame because your mother took so much trouble to catch them so I could take a few photos. The lighting wasn't bright enough and I didn't want to use the flash because I'd forgotten to charge the battery before I left and it was just about run out! Will look forward to seeing your photos now  Hope you had a great birthday and congratulations
-
Thanks everyone. Well, they survived the night okay and so far they seem to have settled in quite well. I'm surprised to see that they are all out and about now whereas before the SDs went in the Jewels were hardly seen and very skittish when they did come out. Sue - yes I was a bit worried about the ammonia because I was supposed to have sold four of the Jewels by now but it fell through because the person thought she could put them with her Guppies & Tetras! However, they are sold again so will be gone soon - I hope!
-
Now ya tell me! I take it they are long living and probably grow fairly large?
-
Oh good I'll be able to see them tomorrow morning then!
-
My new 215 litre tank has nearly finished cycling and the ammonia is down to zero now thank goodness. There were already six juvenile Jewels in it (four of them are leaving soon) and two nights ago I added two Jack Dempseys one of which is rather large (about 8cm or so)! Earlier this evening I transferred my three Silver Dollars to that tank also - but now I'm not so sure I've done the right thing! The whole lot of them are all down one end and just sitting eyeing each other when the Jack Dempsey is not head-butting them! I've left one of the lights in the tank on all night just in case but I'm a bit worried now. Do you think they will settle down and start to tolerate each other or should I remove the SDs before something tragic happens?

I live in New Lynn so our water comes from the Waitakeres - every week it is heavily chlorinated - I know because I can smell it when I turn the tap on - that's when I make the tea with water from my steam distiller for a couple of days otherwise you gag on it! I've always used Stress Coat when I refill the tanks, one drop per litre of water! I wonder if I could use it in my tea.... :-?
-
Thank you Frenchy, I've had a look in my Fish Atlas and it might very well be a synspilum. I've asked the person selling it about his caudal fin too.
-
I've put in a bid on a fish on Trade Me, the owner doesn't know what it is so I'm wondering if any of you very knowledgeable people might be able to identify it for me please? He's had it with other Cichlids with no problems so I'm presuming it's a Cichlid also - hence posting in this forum. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Lifestyle/Pets ... 542126.htm

Welcome back Colin Doesn't seem like too many fish for a 90 litre tank to me. I have three times as many in my 90 litre but I know I'm definately overloaded, like you I'm waiting for my new 215 litre to cycle before they all go into that.

It sounds to me like he has clenched fins/tail which means he's not feeling too good either! When you say you've checked the water you didn't say what you'd checked it for? The PH, to see if there is any ammonia or nitrite or what? How about the temperature, is the heater still working? Does he have any white spots anywhere on his body or fins? I lost a whole tank of baby platies once from not knowing why they had clenched fins - it turned out to be white spot which wiped out the whole tank, I couldn't see in on the babies until it was too late!
-
Hi Jude I have three and one of them is at least 10cm long and just about as wide - from eating all the baby platies I think! You can see a not very good photo of her on my Fish webpage, URL below.
