  1. Obviously a lesson I didn't learn properly the first time Air hoses will siphon water out of your tank if disconnected from the air pump!
  2. you can just scrape them off, but good luck getting rid of snails completely.
  3. me love fishy

    I'm new

Hi Cam All the best with your tank, post some pics when you can
  4. gouramis also can be kept with angels and I have had success with siamese fighters, boys and girls with them, but some angels will nip a male fighters tail.
  5. Yeah they've had that for at least 4-5 years I think. Its a shame, as BK mentioned earlier that the most knowledgeable guy from CK Stanmore has left.
  6. I would say it totally depends on the size of your tank. A big external filter isn't really necessary on a small say 80litre tank. I have an internal for a 60litre tank and an external for a four foot tank. I don't want any internals for the four foot cos I don't want to be able to see them in the tank either.
  7. no harm in trying, if you lose a few guppies you will know its not a good idea
  8. I had a small bn go awol for over a month and thought it was dead, but just came back out of nowhere one day, they can be so hard to spot on driftwood, I hope your bn is fine.
  9. I agree with Alanmin. I don't use CO2, I have never looked into it. I only have low-medium lighting as well and manage to grow plants perfectly well. IMO the trick is to buy the correct plants for your lighting. Plants will get fertilized by the fish waste.
  10. sorry about your boy fluffypants. Hope you have better luck next time.
  11. oh and one I forgot When you are just browsing and can't afford to buy there will be heaps of fish you would like to buy, but when you are out on a mission to get some new fish, there will be none you like.
  12. Killifish can eat neons too, well try to. Plug heater back in after water changes. some lfs people don't know what they are talking about Harlequin rasboras can jump.
  13. Redwood is too far out for me, it would be cheaper for me to buy something from Animates considering the cost of petrol to get out to Redwood and the couple of times I have been there, they only had one staff member and it took ages to get served and they couldn't answer my questions about the fish that I wanted to buy, so I wasn't actually that impressed. I did like their marine displays though.
  14. Yep that's what I said and I also think the guy at organisms and one of the guys at Stanmore road CK are quite knowledgeable about fish.
  15. Is it common for the females to attack the male like that. I have three females and had a male and got up one day to find him dead his body was sort of curled around, I was a bit gutted considering he showed no signs of illness the night before. I was wondering if he tried mating and the female got nasty, but not sure if this is a likely scenario or not?
  16. I've shopped at all three of those. If you are just after some run of the mill fish animates is fine, but fish can be more expensive than other stores. I find the Tower Junction one is okay. I will never shop at Critter kingdom on Blenheim Road again due to poor service. And I like Organisms. But there are heaps of LFS in chch, I also like Critter Kingdom on Stanmore Rd.
  17. you could always just leave it and see if it survives on its own, I've had a few babies survive by their own means.
  18. oh that's awful Matt, sorry for your losses, god knows why people do senseless things like that. I hope your remaining fishies survive, would be great if they could give an id of the person/people that did it wouldn't it.
  19. no prob, just thought I would give you another option for a similar sized fish. I have both angels and gouramis in my 4 foot tank, and I like both species of fish. all the best with your tank, post some pics once you get it fully stocked, would love to see it
  20. I was thinking of golden, blue or pearl gouramis. they are bigger than dwarfs but they are definitely no bigger than angels, so if you were thinking of angels then they would be a similar sized fish for you.
  21. I would continue treating the whole tank with melafix and not do another water change for a week, or do a water change first and then treat for a week, hopefully they will start to improve over this time.
  22. female siamese fighters are fine for a community tank
  23. If you're unsure about the angels with the neons, you could try a couple of gouramis, they would be a "bigger" fish in your tank and I've found with them that they only tend to chase other gouramis and leave other fish alone.
