  1. Thanks for your replies . It definitely is quite rattley sounding so out to lfs....
  2. How do you know when the impellor of the filter pump is worn and needs replacing?? I have an Eheim 2213, output is really down but have done all the usual maintenance.... Any ideas?
  3. Thanx Laura for your reply, they've consumed the egg sac and now are eating shrimp pellets, pleco chips and courgette...hadn't thought of water changes. I'd better get the siphon out....
  4. GBA's spawned ...behind the filter :-? . Eggs then detached and I put them into a breeding net(did I do the right thing?). Now have wrigglers :bounce: . What next folks??
  5. Yes I agree with MCT :bounce: , bottom dwellers and feeders like corys and sucker mouth catfish look after any uneaten food that gets to the gravel and gives the tank a good balance. The suckermouth catfish help eat algae also. Corys need to be kept in a group and are cute and lively.
  6. Search the site for Black beard algae....that will provide you with the info you need. I found a combination of treating with Flourish excel and getting a couple of black line flying foxes...now very little BBA in the tank. Good luck
  7. These can be found occasionally in Auckland LFS. I have a couple and they are adorable so far havent picked on the emerald catfish
  8. I use a Robocan in the same room as the fishtank and it has been there for at least a year and this is one with the high concentration of pyrethrim. The tank is well covered and sited at the opposite end of the room with no problems. Doesn't aggravate my asthma either!! Sooner have the Robocan than flies and their germs everywhere...cant bear the thought of a fly sitting on dog faeces (or a nice ripe carcass) then tap dancing around the kitchen.....
  9. Dont worry now have got information I need!
  10. I have just had confirmation from the dwarf puffer forum that one of the moderators there has the book in english :bounce: same isbn and pg no. and someone else has given me a refernce from AQUALOG the puffers so finally can get the submission in to Warren. (Yay was starting to get worried....) Just proves what great communities these fish forums are Thanks all for your imput
  11. Apparently this book has a reference for dwarf puffers... http://www.cichlidcity.co.uk/index.html ... t=d26.html Does any one have a copy of this book and if so tell me page number that Carinotetraodon travancoricus appears on. Pleeeease
  12. Oh...doesnt sound like it would be valid for the study What do you think?? It's the only reference that came up on the dwarf puffer forum as well my only hope is for a book called Aqualog "the Puffers" wonder if anyone has it here?? Thanks for your help Brad really appreciate it
  13. The pics of female were taken not long after I got her...shes nice and fat now but wont hold still for the camera. Might have something to do with the male hogging the limelight
  14. Mite be a dumb question but  ....How do you get hold of daphnia (in Auckland) and how do you keep it so as to have a constant supply??
  15. Here are some photos...did my best to follow guidelines so hope it comes out ok. Two pic above are of the female. And the one below is the male.
  16. I have photo of one of my dwarf puffers all ready to go but....can anybody help with Book ref and ISBN?? Carinotetraodon travancoricus or Tetraodon travancoricus are scientific names commonly used. I got four books from the library today but none have freshwater puffers...guess I'll be going back tomorrow
  17. Yes the Flourish excel does work well at double dose certainly no probs with the fish ( I have yoyo loaches amoung other things). Takes about a week to 10 days to start hitting the bba...starts going red and then disappears . However as Luke pointed out it does become expensive...I have found treating it hard for a couple of weeks and then getting a couple of black line flying foxes seems to manage it quite well( and the plants grow well too as they are getting a nice source of carbon). The only disadvantage is that the flying foxes grow to be quite large eventually and they can be quite "busy" in the community. Sure you can boil everything and start again but chances are you will get spores when you buy more plants or fish...often you can see it in the "display" tanks at the LFS... Thats my two p's worth!! lol Hope it is of some help!!
  18. I was going to go to the public library to look up fish in their books...hopefully this will be ok!?! Also LFS have good reference books they may be a good source....

    Lost a GBA :(

Sorry about your GBA I had a similar thing happen with one of my lovely males a few weeks back Doesnt seem to be any rhyme nor reason to it! Fishkeeping certainly has its ups and downs!
  21. Thanks Snowman for writing that bristlenoses get bored with the same food!! I had thought that something was wrong , as mine started turning their noses up at some foods. Variety is the spice of life

    Dwarf puffers

Pics...havent posted pics before  But will give it a go. Will have to see how photogenic they are!! lol The little puffs have settled in fine and are giving the snails a hiding. Have eaten the occasional bloodworm and whiteworm. Obviously snails are the preferred tucker. Bad luck snails... I'm so taken with them, they always like to know whats going on and seem to come up to the glass when they hear and see me...real cuties!! Certainly very pleased that I've got them.
