  1. youc an mix different sizes of clowns. they all get along very well and easily. they dont get agrow tih each other like other fish. more community fish, as if the older ones are leaders the smaller ones follow. i find that in my group, everyone gets to feed properly.
  2. love BDs, i find their poo smells when on tiles! wow
  3. wow those tanks look cool would love that second pic type of tank. clown loaches would love them! but never get to see them lol
  4. Love this configuration. FOr my red i may look into this configuration. Black background - One pice of wood in the middle. Open tank. (ill probably keep putting on more, so please contribute or else i will feel a lil lonely) :nilly:
  5. what is the substrate configuration?
  6. thanks:D actually i sold all my discus to raise money for this chilli red - then card packed it. had to spend that money on a car!! had enough money raised for the fish too! so intead i bought the jar:D 3 aros now, one day i wanna have a garage full of aros. i want a silver aro comm one day - with my 70plus clown loaches all big and large at the bottom:D and one fo the plecos when they are large enough
  7. hahaha i have already seem this fish first hand from the importer. he had several but most went like hotcakes, i think this is one of the last couple or last one. beaty of a fish! but.... unfortunately, i cannot buy at this stage. saving for a wedding  But, struck a deal, my wife to be will help me save for a high grade aro after the wedding :happy1: its all about seeing aro to aro
  8. could be but observing - there is no agro towards another they get to eat. could be a hormone they release as alpha some animals change gender. maybe as alpha or dominant fish, they get bigger with a certain hormone
  9. You get that. With clown loaches, you will find out of a large group. Some growth rate is spectacular. I just recently purchased a somewhat large group. Interesting the dynamics of the school changes dramatically from a handful to a shoal. You will find that some grow so fast, others seem like they don’t grow much at all. Body shape is different too. Some get longer, some get talker and thicker vertically. Even my larger ones are like this. Some just have a different body shape, bgody length and growth rate. Genetics perhaps. Maybe from different parts of the river? Who knows. I find that in my big school – maybe 10% are much faster growers, I can see they will get big fast and the bigger they get, the more they eat and the more they eat the faster they get bigger…make sense? Hahaha Some of my small ones I got all the same size, and some are almost double the others, some are 50% the size and some are still small and does not look like they grew much at all.
  10. 400 is not a bad budget, but i guess your problem si that you have to build a ta,ll tank. Your width and length si limited, you have to make up volume by height. whcih is actually ideal for a discus set up. I would say 110 length, 60 fromto back, 80 height. Doable, but glass thcikness is key 021 900 727name is greg, ask him how much that will cost - ensure you ask the MM of glass too. he is really good, got him to work on my set ups before and recommend him to everyone. tell him i referred you - maybe he will give me a discount next time i set up my next monster tank:D haha :happy2:
  11. youc an have what ever height you want, its all about the money.
  12. for a 5 or 6 foot. well, of course i would say the bigger the better. more volume, better growth, happier fish, better water. remember, more volume needs more filtration:D but anyways, i would say standard 150x60x60 or 1800 by 60x60. thats more then plenty for discus. 540 litres the first one OR 648 litres.
  13. yeah, corys also hae great flavour. a neutral white fish, non fatty. :happy2: man these new icons rock! :happy1:
  14. if you hav a 4 foot tall tank, that will be expensive. but make it a total 5 maybe 6 foot in total height including stand, or else it willb e difficult to clean, gets messy. do not get more fish. 300 litres is very small for adult discus. wonder which lfs told you its ok?
  15. discus, especiallyb abies at 28c temperature will eat voraciuosly no matter the space of tank. its a matter of growth, stunting and ruining them. if you buy a high prized discus. I have purchased rare discus before at 250 each! medium youngh adults.... you spend that sort of money you wont wanna stunt them. you may buy smaller ones, that are cheaper. when you buy smaller discus, you already hav a large, very lage chance they will never grow to full potential. Only a small proportion of discus from a batch of fry will actually look great! alot will die, probbly almost if not mroe than half. thats why adult discus, taht look spectacular you pay more for. your case, if you add more to your 150L, you will regret it. you will stunt them, though yoru aily water changes are great, puttin 40% cold water into a warm tank will reduce temps that will impact your discus too (unless you are pre heating the water or mixing hot and cold from tank) but what ah assle. better to have more volume and save allt hat ime. IF you havea space constraint. then i suggest you reasses the number of fish - in all honestly, a 4 foot tall tank will be hard to manage, you will need to ensure that that tank is on a extremely low stand.
  16. looks cool! love those bandeds. but yeah, they are not at all active:D but novelty,. when you see it its like seeing an endangered animal in the wild that is rare to see:) satisfying.
  17. i would not worry about it to be honest, it should be ok. poor cory though :nilly:
  18. everyone is a noob berfore you stop being a noob... its allg ood. first of all, what is the total length you can fit into that gap where you want the tank? If its a maximum of 1metre, then you will need a very tall tank for the size - meaning glass thickness is key. 9 discus, your tank is a bit small. Frequent water changes i take it? anyway, discus love taller tanks than longer - theyw ill thrive in a tall tank but volume wize, you shouldnt get mroe discus in a 300something litre tank. the question is this. 1) what is the maximum length, height and wide you can go with? and we can work from there. as for getting more discus, i would hold off and upgrade tank size - thsi way your discus will reach better potential. quality vs quantity.
  19. yes it will BUT if your filter is up to it, should not be too bad, its a small fish a large fish dying will cause havoc in the system. but if your filtration is strong enough, youw ont even notice it.
  20. a rock teh size of your fist can bury a fish that they cant get out. they are heavy, a fish is probalby not even a gram in some cases, a small clown loach is so small and light, a reasonable sized stone will crush and trap them
  21. yeah, i have had clown loaches get crushed by rocks, you learn to position rocks to stabalise them from digging. if you canf ind ti tahts optimal of course, but if your filtration si reasonable, no big deal.
  22. there will always be defects in parts. Jager, go jager. dependso n the type of fish you keep. cost of them etc. you gotta protect live stock. I use only Jager now, the thermostat is very tight.
  23. oh ok but boiling it would remove so much tannins! ahh, ok, i guess same works with pre soaking the peat in just normal water - then baggint the sunken peat.
  24. was thinking, boiling peat for the brown juice. does this expire? should i chill it? or can i just leaev it room temp and use as needed?
