  3. thats a week growth for the plants at the back, its still a new tank so give it a lil while to settle properly Still im pleased with it.
  4. hiya The daltons aquatic mix i got from palmers in takanini an the sand from placemakers in takanini Im not sure what mitre 10 have got in way of sand, give them a try though. I tried bunnings first as i was there at the time getting plumbing bits but they didnt have any.
  5. ok a photo update, comparing photos the plants have grown heaps lol Click here Check out the plants at the back compared to last weeks photo Click here Im very pleased at the progress
  6. hiya I have just started using the aquatic mix base as well based on posts from here i thought i would give it a go on my new tank. I have found my plants are happier even though its only been setup just under a week. New growth was evident around the 2nd or 3rd day which suprised me because plants like to settle in first so i guess they settled real quick. On top od the mix i have used number 1 sand from placemakers. Below is a closeup pic of sand, bear in mind the plants is just over an inch tall, i zoomed close to see the sand The fish love the sand, they pick it up and sift it in their mouths looking for food I use CO2 and homemade fertiliser as well in the water. I used about 1-1/2 " of mix covered in about 2" of sand Time will tell but based on what i have seen in last few days this is going to work well
  7. Hiyas Friends of mine have just setup their new tank so i said i would take some pics and put them up to view. Click here
  8. some HIH info here http://www.aquariumfish.net/information/hole_in_the_head.htm http://www.worldcichlids.com/diseases/Adamhith.html More info quote from http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/information/Diseases.htm#Hexamita
  9. years ago when i was a late teen i had an oscar that had HIH, took him to the vet with info i had copied from books on HIH and he gave me some stuff in red capsules that i had to break open and put in the water. Worked well, sorry cant remember what it was now but may have been an anitbiotic of some sort. But copy some info from the net on HIH (causes, cures etc) and see ya vet.
  10. Alan : thanx for that Saves a bit of looking , going to print it and keep with the tank log, Dont think they will steal that lol. Blueram : I have 2 spare males but as they are in the big tank be harder to catch though not impossible lol, if you want them you can have them for some moss I will need some moss for the moss wall which is the next item on the list. PM me if your keen Thanx Peter
  11. update on the tank: The plants are settling in well with the ambulia spurting 2-3" of growth. the others are showing new growth, Im pleased they are settling in quicker than i expected. I found some chain swords at hollywoods (real ones) so snapped those up, been after those for ages. My lappy got stolen on tuesday after i went out for 3 hours, got home it was gone, only the lappy and bag. Most annoying was it had the recipe for the PMDD on it with warrens adaption of it, so will need to find all that info again which shouldnt be too hard. Fish are doing well, they love all the new open space they have, specially MR and MRS Kribby Peter
  12. hi Vicki an Travis I went there on monday and tuesday for a better look but they didnt have any large pieces. The biggest they had was about 3ft long and looked like a log, though they did have some interesting smaller pieces. Thanx Peter
  13. HIya Quoted from a website http://www.myfishtank.net/freshwaterprofiles.php?profile=199 Hope this helps Peter
  14. Hiya Im going there tomorrow if they are open so will have a look. If they have any big ones will take a pic and post it here. Thanx Peter
  15. hi. friends of mine found it for their tank but wouldnt fit so they gave it to me for mine. I think they got it from jansen's in Mt Eden. Thanx Peter
  16. hi. Thanx for the compliment The fish in it are a mixture with no real theme. Kribs, danios, neons, other little tetras, a few rams, pearl gourami's, Bristlenose's, few corys, algae eaters, plan to get some SAE's if i can and whatever other fish i see in the LFS that i like but not big ones. PLants are some crypty stuff (im not sure of the proper name) but they multiply good, some mini sag, ambulia, caboomba, and other grassy type plants. I made the sump so i can keep cables tubes etc out of the main tank, I like the idea of better filteration with a sump as bigger surface areas for good bacteria etc. I have the heater in the sump also. And i can dose the tank, feed the fish etc from the sump also. Plus it was cheap to build even though i need to buy a quieter pump, It still worked out cheaper than a few big external filters. The Pipes that you can see in the tank will be hidden once i have made the moss/planted wall Thanx Peter
  17. Hiyas as some may know im doing a 6FT planted freshwater, Yesterday filled it with new water and let it heat over night, Put in a few plants and fish today from the 2ft. will add the rest over the next few days and all the plants need to do is grow forth and multiply Heres some pics. more will come as time progress's Click Here for pics then click on a pic
  18. Nothing wrong with those pics awesome Love looking at the progress on these reef tanks Thanx peter
  19. Update. The 6ft has been pumping for a month or so now, Still using the spa pool pump with a valve on the outlet, works very well, doesnt over heat. Still need to make my combined spraybar/overflow, get that sorted and then make a moss wall i seen on here in another post, i thought that would look really cool plus it would hide my plumbing and such. Just waiting on the 5ft bit of driftwood to sink and then i can drain it and lay down the aquatic mix and top layer of the substrate. Im not happy with my sump as its proving difficult to include the crypty growing area i wanted in it, i had made the sump first then thought about the plants, i have seen another , better design but for now what i have will do till i make a better one. I have made and tried poor mans dupla drops in my 2ft, seems to be doing good, still playing to get the mix right, need to get a test kit i think. All the ingredients i got from switched on gardener in manukau except for the potassium nitrate, Dont think he believed me when i said it was for my fishtank lol The potassium nitrate i "aquired" as i couldnt buy it anywhere as its a ingredient for gunpowder lol, but if you work for a high school or a uni or know some one who does then you should be able to get it. Thanx Peter
  20. hiya again I got them from this site They link straight to the image, isnt much details on them. Thanx Peter
  21. Hiya Cees Yup shouldnt be too hard to find Thanx peter
  22. hiyas The Kribby family are doing well, below is a pic i finally got of mummy and some babies. There arent many babies, about 10 i think, once they all go to the new tank they should do much better, too many fish in the tank. SPent most of yesterday afternoon trying for a decentish pic and didnt get one, was on my way out the door this morning to take my daughter to school and saw the photo oppotunity (sp?), i left the cam beside the fishtank in case lol Just a question, how many pics do you take and how many do you actually keep? for every 10 or so i take i probaly keep 1, maybe i need more practise taking pics of fishy things lol Thanx Peter
  23. Thanx guys Im trying to get better pics but they are rather camera shy lol This is their 3rd sucessful litter? spawn? I have 5 from the first lot, the 2nd lot just disapeared, so hopefully this lot will get a few more. There's probaly around 30 or so at a guess, not too many. They really are fun to watch More pic updates soon.... Thanx Peter
  24. Hiyas My Kribbys have had babies, i suspected they had eggs as they were guarding their cave again and today they were out for a stroll in the woods. Here is a pic of daddy and some babies. Thanx Peter
