Hole in the head

Featured Replies

It's not a well understood "disease" generally occurs under poor water conditions, or stress (big fish in small tank) some think it may be related to vitamin deficiencies. So diet may play a part too.

Had a mate out in Waiuku that had that one, they cured it with about 1500kgs of dirt on him. Not a particularly funny subject as his son found him.

Try www.dph.nl it's a Discus site and they talk about HIH often. Sorry couldn't help any more but have only even read about this. White stringy discharge from around the head dose sound like HIH.

years ago when i was a late teen i had an oscar that had HIH, took him to the vet with info i had copied from books on HIH and he gave me some stuff in red capsules that i had to break open and put in the water. Worked well, sorry cant remember what it was now but may have been an anitbiotic of some sort. But copy some info from the net on HIH (causes, cures etc) and see ya vet.

Hexamita (Hole in the head)

Symptoms: What appear to be small holes in head, ulceration of lateral line.

Another name for this disease is "Hole-in-the-Head" disease. Even though this is a disease of the digestive tract, it often manifests itself as ulcerations in the head and/or lateral line. Discus and other large cichlids, especially Oscars, are especially prone to Hexamita. As it is a disease of the digestive tract, a wasting away or loss of appetite may be experienced.

An effective treatment is the drug metronidazole. A combined treatment in the food (1% in any food the fish will eat) and in the water (12 mg per liter) is recommended. Repeat the water treatment every other day for three treatments. Improvement in aquarium conditions has helped in the disease just going away with no treatment.

Thanks Thunderstorm but he died sometime through the night, looks like it may have been something different as at first it was a swollen head and when i pulled him out this morning it appeared to be like a crater as if something had eaten it away. Other Rams and Angels in the same tank are fine. :(
