  1. Either you missed the point, or I really don't think you understand. But what would I know? Little point trying to argue with me about what Mesocosm said. Once again, your best bet is to ask him, not me. He is a qualified scientist and will be happy to elucidate.

May as well link it, it is the best iron thread I've seen here  http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt94 ... sc&start=0
  3. Well I'm not going to argue with your little chart Layton  I did not see Mesocosm saying anything that would dissagree with it either. What he did was add to the discussion the impact of other variables such as C: N: P ratio, rate of photosynthesis, Ca level, CO3 level, and the "biggies" ... O2 level, pH, and intracellular zooxanthellae density. Other "indirect variables" include photoperiod, temperature, water flow rate(s), and the genetic profile of the specimen. However, you seem to have an issue with Mesocosm somehow. Once again I would suggest you take it up with him, pointless trying to have an argument with me. I am no expert in this and am therefore happy to accept advice on the subject from people who are. Mesocosm is a qualified scientist and will be happy to answer your questions, provided they are not argumentative.

Funny you said that!!!! A couple of years ago when I was sourcing these chemicals I called on a number of chemists, and was quizzed intently, before they eventually told me they couldn't do it. The whole thing was a real pain, embarrassing even, I did feel under suspicion. Makes me appreciate the internet even more
  5. As I just said, no point arguing with me on it, take it up with him. He is a nice guy, extremely knowledgeable, and always happy to help.

    Potassium supplement

Been there, tried that, it is simply not available except at extortionate prices for tiny amounts. Mind you that was a couple of years ago, but I doubt anything has changed.
  7. Ha Ha!!! Funny but true! Cracker is a great guy to know because 1. he does have a great tank & is therefore worth listening to, and 2. He does think outside the square and has some great insights.

If you do a web search Layton it is available. I imported 5 kg of high grade from the US. How much? Not much. Freight it the biggest part.
  9. I think the thread is about skeletogenisis and carbonate hardness. If you cannot see what Mesocosm is talking about ( in it's entire context of course ), there is little point trying to argue with me about it. Ask Mesocosm. He is a nice guy and will be happy to clarify anything you don't understand. Be warned, he is NOT into arguing though.
  10. There was more to his point than that sentence you quoted
  11. They are a slighly different chemical formula, dihydrate has in effect, more water in the molecule than anhydrous. So anhydrous actually contains more calcium per kilo. Can't quite remember but just off my head I think the amount is roughly 20% more calcium in the anhydrous one.
  12. I think you may have missed the point. If you read it all properly, you will see that there are a lot of other variables involved. In some conditions increased alkalinity will do what his experiment verified, and in some it won't.

Chloride against sulphur in NSW runs about 10 to 1. So if wanting to keep correct ionic balance, if dosing say calcium chloride, you could also add magnesium in the form of magnesium sulphate, enough to get the correct balance. Likely though you would also have to add some magnesium in the form of magnesium chloride because otherwise it would be easy to quickly exceed the amount of sulphate in NSW. I think what Cracker is saying is that since there is already a heckuva lot of chloride in NSW, a bit more will not change things much in % terms. However take sulphate for example which is in much lower amount, would be more easy to change the amount by a big %. But for me, I always try to keep everything as close to NSW as possible, wether the benefit has been proved or not, it can't hurt.

A placebo effect is when someone is given fake medicine for a headache, or whatever, and they get better, cos it's psychological. They imagined they would get better, so they did. The nice purples that came about each time I dosed potassium were not imaginary.
  15. Vicki is there any way you could post a reasonable quality pic of it. Without that it is quite hard to advise what to do.
  16. Calcium Chloride. It can be bought at the LFS for somewhere around $50.00 per kilo, or pm Cracker he knows somewhere to get a good quality grade of it for way less, but you have to get 25 kg sack. I think it's $130.00 or similar for the sack.
  17. Mesocosms posts in that thread make a lot of sense to me. I think the other guy was more asking a question, than stating a fact.

Well that's interesting! What has had me wondering also, is that only a tiny amount is dosed, which I would have thought would make little difference to the total amount in the water, yet it had a very good effect. Bit of a mystery Also, it is not that zeovit have got some secret ingredient in it or anything, because the first potassium I ever dosed was not the zeovit one, just commercially available potassium chloride, a tiny amount, and the effect was quite marked. A few days ago I heard from another respected reefer on this forum who said he tried it, but there was no effect! So - there is still much to learn. Just one thing I'd say to anyone thinking of trying it, be careful not to overdose, keep the amount tiny. Also, as far as I can tell, it only works if the acros are already showing nice colours, it's not going to colour up brown ones or anything.

Craig has one of those big tanks with rockwork designed in such a way, that the fish behave very naturally, and are not jammed up with each other. When he puts a new fish in the others hardly look at it. Not like in my little tank!

Well written Craig Both style and content not quite what I would expect to see in a textbook, but sensible advice born of experience & if followed will assist people to not get big losses.
  21. OK, good place to buy 150 or 75 watt DE MH is Lamp Specialists, 57 Hillside Rd, North Shore.

    UNBELIEVABLE

Well let's say the pics been photoshopped, even if they have, it's still an awesome tank. The corals are in primo health, good growth with solid form, good polyp extension, and comparing the colours of the various corals it looks like a low nutrient tank but with all the right nutrients available. Only thing wrong it's one of those ticking bomb Deep Sand Beds . Still, when it explodes I wouldn't mind cleaning up the mess!
  23. I see, yes even 70 watt may be a lot for that size! A couple of years ago Hollywood Fish Farm were talking about bringing in some 70 watt bulbs, not sure if it happened but you could give them a call. Otherwise Reef or Jetski might, and failing that I do know a web site where they can be bought.
