Actually sorry Layton I really shouldn't mock. Just there is academia, and then there is gobledegook. Worrying if someone pronounced their Latin with the Correct English accent, or the Cras American one, struck me as the latter. I just found it hysterical, had to poke some fun. If anyone said something like that, it would have to be you  . Anyhow, I did download the video, excellent, has done wonders for my appreciation of Eric, and yes, he is a lot younger than I thought.

So I'll assume you were taught to pronounce it correctly, with an "intuitive feel" for the British English pronunciation, as used, of course, by Julius Ceasar? .

I studied Latin for 2 years, although forgotten much of it now. It has been a dead language for one and a half thousand years. Nobody knows how it was pronounced. I had a bit of a laugh a while back watching a thing on TV about Eton. Some of them had to give a speech in Latin. This was done in such a posh English accent that I am sure Julius Ceasar would not have been able to understand a word  Even I could not get it all, I was taught by an Italian who had his way to pronounce it.
  4. Why is that Drifty? I was just thinking about getting one.
  5. Basically, you would divide by 26 & multiply by 20. This will work if it is a straight exercise in maths. However, for me, because I believe in "other factors" that can sometimes exist, I always standardise my salinity to 1.025 before testing. That way I can look through past records & it's always on a par, one with another, and it's a real value, not a theoretical adjusted one. I do use a formula for testing NSW when I get it, the salinity can vary sometimes, I don't bother adjusting parameters in it, do that after it goes in the tank, but if on a given day if it is 1.028, ca 400, then it would be 400/28=14.29x25=ca standardised to 1.025 of 357. Then if I was into something like Chimeras calculator, I could calculate how much ca to add to the tank with the dilution top off to keep things where they were before. BTW that's just an example my tank runs higher than ca 400.
  6. I steal them from other web sites like nzreefs
  7. Just goes to show, the only rule in this hobby is there are no rules
  8. Agreed. I'd be interested to see if Layton has anything of value to say about zeovit.
  9. Here is my little Sherman the Shrimp Slayer, now resting in peace. Notice the innocent experssion, which almost hides the evil stare, and fat belly.
  10. Actually, in addition to a violin player, you now qualify for a soapbox. In fact because you know "How to pice the Zeovit puzzle", "The facts about iron", and "How to grow colourful acros", I am giving you 3 of them.
  11. What about the effect on PH though?

Ha Ha! You have a way with words Reef Summarises all those pages of science perfectly
  13. Looking at your pic, that kind of dieback is caused to brains quite easily, it can be lack of light, too much light, too much flow, attack from other corals. If it happened when under that leather it was likely shading or chemical attack. Sometimes it can happen simply by repositioning the brain and not realising part of it is now in the shade. I have read that once this happens they will never grow back, however, I bought one like that once, and over time it did grow back.
  14. My flamehawk lived with my 3 cleaners for probably a year or so. Then one day I saw him taking a big interest in one of them & swimming real fast tight circles around it. Then he would take the odd bite. Day or so later one shrimp was shredded, and the other 2 instead of roaming freely over the tank, knew they were in danger and moved under the anemone tentacles, only coming out at night. They lasted a few weeks but he got them in the end. I missed my shrimps so a few months later I (stupidly) decided to try another. It got shredded in the first few minutes. I still liked my flamehawk he did have character, but some time later I introduced a blenny, bigger than the flame. The flame viciously attacked him, stalking him around the tank, surprising how vicious these things can be when they get started. After a few minutes the blenny had big open bite wounds including 1/2 his mouth hanging off, I decided whichever one of them I could catch would have to come out. I stuck the net in & the hawk was the one that got caught, I put him in a bucket temporarily before transfering to a frag tank, but my back was turned for a few minutes & he jumped out & died on the carpet. Funny, I found him & didn't even feel sorry. The blenny, to my surprise, made a full recovery, I still have him.

No Then why did you ask? In fact I was just waiting for you to jump in to the thread and attack me. Once Chimera had a go I knew you would not be able to help yourself. Why attack me anyway? I have no issue with anyone using a calculator. And to say I misquoted Chimera is just plain rubbish anyway. I did not quote his whole post in its entirety, but the piece I quoted was certainly not misquoted. Seems I either have to be a flag waving, card carrying, fanatical calculator lobbyist, or I'm the enemy. I added to the discussion that there are other influencing factors, such as for example, your claim of alkalinity using bacteria which are not built into any calculator I've seen. If someone thinks that is not wanted in this discussion, then what is the discussion? I've answered you publicly because you accused me publicly. But if you still have a problem send me a pm instead of degrading yet another thread.

Oh, and if you are all upset because of this - I'll just let everybody know it was not you I was thinking of Chimera.

I thought the bit of my post you quoted was helpful & well thought out. Don't know why you feel so negative about it. And to remind you what I previously said Maybe you need to cool off a while.

    fish 360's

Yes the fish has only just recovered from whatever had been ailing him, and may still be a little susceptable to changes. All the fish will now have more immunity to whitespot than they had before, it could be that if you just wait it out, monitoring carefully, the whitespot will slowly subside and eventually dissapear.

I don't think it is quite that black and white. The statement is too simplistic. The calculator is always right, but it is not always right. Many people have had the experience of working out via a calculator what they need to add to move a level from the current value, to the desired value. They then add the dose, but upon testing after a suitable time period, find that the value is not what the calculator said it would be. The reason for this is that the calculator excludes all other variables, it is just straight mathematical calculations of the chemical in question. In real life, there may exist many other factors that will have an influence. So for example, a person may want his calcium to be 450, but when he tests he finds it has dropped to 260. He freaks, uses his calculator to figure out how much to add, and sticks it in the tank. Next day, he tests, fully expecting calcium to be 450, as per the calculator. But it isn't it is only 390. Why? This is because his alkalinity was way too high and took out a lot of the calcium, plus magnesium was only 900. These other factors had an influence. Another example is one Layton touted a while ago, when trying to explain why Chimera had added a lot of alkalinity, but alkalinity was still low. Layton said this might be due to the action of bacteria which used the alkalinity. So if all these could be true there can be a lot of other factors that have a bearing, I did not see the action of bacteria built into any calculators I have seen. So, correct course of action for me anyway, is use the calculators as a very useful guide to establish initial dose, but don't blindly accept the result will be a straight exersize in maths, it isn't. The water should be tested after dosing, and additional dosing be undertaken to make it good. Many reefers become quite intuitive about their tank after a while, and will know how much to dose to move one value to another, without having to refer to a calculator every time.

Man that is a beautiful fish!! Now I see what all the fuss is about! Are those little white dots under its eye the white spot, or something else?
