Wanting to know of some cool fish to put in my 40l planted tank? I had 1 plakat fighter, some rasboras and neons. But the neons and rasboras went in the discus tank. And im gna take the fighter out. So its going to be fish free so any ideas on what I could put in there would be great. thanks

Hi all. Need some help. I have bought two new discus for my new discus tank, I have 3 other smaller discus in the tank. Tank is 230L. the two new discus i got are an apparent pair and have spawnd before but the guy would take the eggs out as he didnt want fry. how would I go about breeding them. Should I leave them in the big tank and see if they spawn or shoul I put them in a breeder with a cone or something for them to spawn on. I have done a bit of research but any info on here would be much appreciated. I have kept discus before but never bred any. thanks

Just a question. Do you, need to dose calcium, magnesium ect.. to the ocean water? As with the salt mix you get cal and mg and trace elements in the salt so you dont need to spend as much on supplements. If ocean water has all this I have wasted alot of time and money in the past haha :rolfl:

Just set up a 40L planted tank and was wondering what types of substrate I could use? I have fine black gravel in it for the time being. But has no nutritional value for the plants. I will be running two t8 tubes. Probably power glo. Maby in the 6500 - 10000k range. might do 1 white and 1 more on the pink side. But from al the reading I have done a good substrate is going to improve plant grwoth alot more than great lights. any info would be much appreciated thanks

I have found africans to be easier to keep than community fish. More hardy fish from my experiences. but fmueller is right basic aquarium husbandry no mata what you get they should do fine. I have kept many different types of fish over the years but always end up back with africans. :bggrn: and if your committed to a weekly wc on whatever you get they'll do great. Or a 25% twice a week is what I try do with my africans. as for community fish I found I lost fish on a more regular basis (dont know why tho ). And also my water comes out the tap at 7.8ph so dont have to do anything to it just let my coral rock do the buffering for me :thup: I do love community fish as much as any other fish so its really personal preference, and what you are looking to achieve with your tank. So its up to you at the end of the day. go with what you like and what you want to look at and enjoy everyday. hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Il give him a little more time. Photo does not do it any justice! I will try get a better photo with a better camera. I have 1 male and 2 females. They have spawned but I did not keep them due to not knowing what they are. All 3 from same spawn though which is good.

:iag: :gpo2: ryan It is a shame that we have a poor selection of good lines of cichlids in nz. and yea the fish up at pupuke come from a good line from germany I think ron said. But yea theres no females from those lines available. Which I do understand as if the females leak out then they may get bread with a poor line resulting in less quality fish.(or as the topic we are on )get cross bread. But at the same time id love to get me hands on them :bggrn: I am also a victum of buying what I thought was pure and they ended up being hybrid. So as much as I like them I do have a dislike towards them. Mainly for the reason that in nz it is harder to get pure lines of fish so when purchasing fish it is hard to find good quality with guarantee that they are not hybrid, especially peacocks! With the limited fish we have.

I appreciate this very much! by posting this topic on hybrids I am not in any way trying to cause an argument or anything like that just want to know peoples opinions on this subject. :bggrn: I know this is a bit of a touchy subject :slfg: any way. I love them, some of the most beautiful fish I have owned have been hybrids. Come on who doesnt like ob's. Dont get me wrong I would not breed hybrids then sell them off to unsuspecting victims. but If it happens I do keep the fry and raise them to adults and keep the males for show. you never know what awsome colours youll get. so thanks guys and leme know your thoughts
