  1. noisey little sucker. wouldnt put up with that for too long! keeping the water cool is the biggest problem with the native fish. they prefer a temp wich we find uncomfortably cold. even a room temp tank really is a bit to warm for them. i get away with it, by utilising a low stocking rate, adequate filtratration, and vigorous aeration. hope this helps. is there a thread on chillers anywhere guys?
  2. what is a peltier? heya blondfish, how long have you been keeping fish? in the beginning, a lot of good fish died by my failings.
  3. feeding the fish is sometimes difficult, my giantbully can be really frustrating. the shrimps and prawns in the supermarket are usually taken, mealworms too. removing uneaten food is an ongoing chore. no way will it eat dried consumer type fish food. i use straight up tapwater from the garden hose. no more than 50% change. get a thermometer, and keep an eye on the temperature. it will surprise you.
  4. just read thru the whole of that rock tank post. wow! i should of seen it coming, and in the end, it did! sad
  5. http://www2.mdbc.gov.au/subs/fish-info/ ... axias.html heres a bit i found on them. dont know if the link will work thou, i have never tried to copy and paste a link before. a 1st time for everything! landlocked, translocated....
  6. nice link. the 1st link had me scratchin my head a bit.. i have never had a tank scaped like that. looks cool. i would think that uneaten food would be problematic?
  7. no, never kept them. pretty sure they inhabit the central north island, volcanic crater lakes , but could be wrong. probly need a large, well aged/settled tank.

    hi from taupo.

thanks everyone for the welcome. charles, natives are interesting, and not well known by people who dont keep fish, and i will always have a soft spot for them. would love a cold tank stocked well with them, and one day, when ive got some spare bucks for a chiller, it will be possible. in my lounge, with the fire going, my tank hovers around 23*C. thats pretty much all year round....
