  1. bad water is not a problem ive already spoken with MAF just need to run it through a UV filter neat huh!
  2. very good question and no i didn't if i could have afforded it i would have so in the long run ill put down flooring and insulate that, its one of those things im just going to have to live with i plan on moving within the next 2 years so for that time it has kinda made it unethical
  3. yip this is the quarantine setup only one shed will be tho the other will just be breeding and that is its final destination
  4. i don't think i will need anything like that because the approved bio security treatments MPI-STD-ABTRT only lists dish-wash liquid as something to clean and disinfect with but if i find that i do need something else that shouldn't be a problem Ive already received the relevant training in it so it wont be much of a problem to get it certified. tho that is interesting that they use it
  5. that's a really good idea do you think the 25 then gap then 25 would be better than just a 50mm poly? also i didn't think about where it would run off too also if i stick the poly directly to the wall will it still sweat?
  6. thanks! im running a thread about that at the moment viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60950 im trying to decide if i went to 25mm polly (s) might be too thin or not i don't have the money to spend a massive amount on it in the beginning if i wait till i have the money for 50mm it could never get finished!
  7. cool that doesn't sound like too much of a problem i was expecting to have to apply for resource consent and was going to ask the council about it anyway and the wash basin was something you would expect from a quarantine anyway (don't want to be eating the little buggies after playing with the fishies!) im a little bit familiar with most quarantine procedures anyway having experience with it in the past and im expecting a few extra things to come up to do and adjust (cant expect everything to be perfect first time!) im sure ill learn a bit when i go get my BNZ-STD-TFGEN cert training. thanks for insuring im aware of that it could have been a shocker! ive just posted a thred with where im currently at with the building its self let me know if you spot simething i might need to be aware of! viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60969
  8. and one of my current tanks i hope you like them!
  9. the building's i have already built for it are basically 2 garden sheds the sheds are on a concrete slab that will take the weight of the tanks the entire sheds are lifted 200 off the ground (including the doorway so you have to step into them) the base will be fully sealed so any spillage wont be able to escape from the room so in effect i can spill 1156 liters on the ground without it leaving the room so not much risk there i have spoken to the regional council about the sheds and they basically say if its under 10m square they don't require any permit tho i will be calling them again to ensure its ok for it to be a temporary transitional facility
  10. Im mostly planning on doing it with the polly because i can get a good seal with the expanding foam(good idea Jackp!) and presentation is something i hold in a bit of a higher regard when it comes to inspection time by MAF it will be good to show a clean well presented place also when it comes to bats i know its a bit dumb or pedantic i have a small worry of the fibers getting into the tanks, breathing that stuff is bad for people let alone for a little fish who thinks its food. also with the bats trying to make it look good like sealing it away behind boards will end up costing more than the polly in the long run.
  11. Yea I did look at them and if it would fit I would buy them but all of them are 500 wide, unfortunately my rooms are a little too narrow for them the rooms are only 3.4x1.7 so if I had them on the 2 sides I would only have .7 for me to move in, so I'm looking for 400 wide tanks so I have 900 to move in between them I'm hopping to upload some pics in a new thread tonight so you can see what's going on
  12. Thanks for the offer but I'm not really looking to spend so much on the insulation I'm sure I can knock them down to about $250 for 25mm S, I know it's not HD but it should do well enough for what I need I'm trying to find the cheapest way possible because I know there is not a lot of money in this to repay it back for a while so at the moment it's just coming out of the back pocket and I still have shelving, tanks, heating and permits to go!
  13. ive just come from ITM wairau park the cheapest i could get them too was $25 a sheet what ITM have you been too so i can try there?
  14. to insulate the room if you have a cheaper way im all ears?
  15. its a large flat sheet i know the thing your talking about with all those cuts in it, this is one big flat sheet you need a traler just to take home one sheet (unless you cut it up lots)
  16. Really! people have been really trying to rip me off... and i might have been a bit daft thinking about it. one of my current tanks is 1200x450x400 and i got that for $800 in stores! (had filters and heaters and lights too but i guess looking back that's still a bit of a rip now i look back at it and the price of glass etc)
  17. that's a awesome price! ill go there tomorrow and check it out!
  18. thanks the quote for the $100 tanks was from Greg i heard about him from word of mouth but its best to ask around tho there is another guy (trademe name goldfishman?) said he would do a deal for under $100 per tank tho i only hear good things about Greg so i might go with him anyway also i wont limit it i will be very open to what the "market" has a interest in even if it is a one off (i would love to get some of the freshwater rays in but i may have to jump a few hoops with MAF and my wife to do that (but i wanna try in the long run)
  19. i think the tough tanks place was quoting you as 150cmx70cmx60cm that will be why it was 12mm glass (therefore not a bad price?)
  20. ante room? is that anti contamination room?
  21. just to make you guys aware since 90% of the people who are commenting on this thread seem to know something or have some idea on the topic you might be interested in this topic i have started? viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60950 *quarantine setup questions*
  22. Hi everyone i have a few quick questions i am currently in the process of setting up a quarantine facility near the Auckland airport i have 2 buildings built for this (they are made of tin so insulation is essential or i will cook them in summer and have frozen fish in winter) one for quarantine and one for breeding. i am in the process of hearing back from quotes for fish tanks (looking at approx 20 tanks 1000 x 400 x 400) if anyone knows who can make them for cheap i would appreciate it or where i can buy the glass i don't mind making them that would be really helpful my current cheapest quote is just under $100 lidded also the other thing I'm looking for is polystyrene sheets I'm hoping for 50mm but due to price i may have to resort to 25mm if you know where i can get some cheaply from that would also be great, i am after 20 sheets of the 2.4 x 1.2 or equivalent area at the current price i have for them at $33.44 a sheet comes to $668.80 so if i can cut some money off that i will be very happy the other question i have is from what i see about 1 person every month shows interest in importing fish and for some reason or another doesn't follow through and I'm wanting to know why, what were their pitfalls? I'm already in talking to MAF about setting up and will be visiting them within the next few weeks and they seem interested in how i will be setting up so far i have put about $2000 in this also have done quite a bit of MAF paperwork and am not likely to give up easily also any other hints tips ideas would be helpful also sorry i most likely wont be doing marine fish for a few years yet my main focus will be African cichlids but i will also do the uncommon fish that you don't find often in fish stores (eg neons and plattys i wont import because i would rather have a more diverse range of fish than whatever is already easily available unless they are a F1) so any help would be great thanks

    Hi everyone

Hi everyone My wife and i have gotten into tropical fish last Christmas - in a big way. Over the last year we have had a 250ltr community tank, 80ltr guppy/platty tank and a 215ltr barb tank that got condensed into another 80ltr tank. We have now cut down to only a 80ltr. Barb tank and a 250ltr African cichlid tank, while I have downsized there I am starting 2 fish rooms one for quarantine as I am planning on importing tropical fish (in the process of getting everything ready for MAF permits/approval) and the other room is for breeding primarily African cichlids. David.
