  1. anyone know best place to source from in auckland? need to make some up so even flat pieces of aluminium that i can shape perhaps?
  2. i have a "rare, endangered and shiny" chromis for sale at the special price of $US20,000 if anyone is interested... 8)
  3. i moved one of my streams to point directly at an sps coral (unsure of id, looks a little like millepora or similar) and the growth of it ever since i did that is quite insane. must get some photo's up soon of the growth!
  4. for sps generally yes. and also, turn over = the amount of water your DISPLAY tank turns over, so only divide by your main tank volume (disregard your sump etc)
  5. actually, mine varies between 55 and 80 times because of the stream settings (return and closed loop are constant). im pretty sure some here have more than that!
  6. pfft! i got 70 times and am still looking for more. check out the ocean next time, its quite turbulent you know
  7. I was up looking through my tank to see what comes out at night. i've had a look before with a torch but didnt see much. this time i just used the infrared from my digital camera so as not to 'scare away' any unsuspecting guests. how bloody interesting! i'd have to say i have seen worms larger than i ever thought i had, centipede looking things, more acro crabs, crabs twice the size of the acro crabs and more. unreal, its more interesting at night than day!
  8. unless he wants to run with man-made rocks, big skimmer and no light until the phosphates drop not sure how long the 'leeching' would take before phosphates dropped to near 0 levels, depends on the amount of rock

    Refugiums

an upstream refugium is much better than a downstream refugium, most only do downstream as they cant fit the upstream above their tank or if they can, its an eye-sore. i have an in-wall tank so have contemplated putting in a small 180 litre upstream refugium above my display and having a portion of the return flow going to this. this would be specifically for breeding pods to gravity feed the main tank. im about to split my current (320 litre) refugium in half, either with baffles or egg-crate and have macro algae in the first half and LR/pods/frags in the 2nd half. there are certainly some types of caleurpa that are much more painful to keep than others. i think racemosa (which almost looks like weed with small grapes on it) is easiest as its large and easier to trim. grows extremely fast though. the smaller calerpa (smaller intertwining type) is stringy and if you get it growing into your live rock, you will never fully get it out. it sticks like s@#$ to a blanket! have a go with racemosa, it cant hurt - but as pies says run carbon to keep up good water clarity (or zeovit )
  15. steve that is an awesome coral, put me down for one of your frags if you're selling them off
  16. superb, 8/10 - ya miss a perfect score because as you say, your acro's have certainly lost some colour from last time but on the bright side shes recovering! progress photos as they colour would be cool! just pick one or two browner acros and take a pic every week

    Food

make yourself up some frozen and feed once a week. cookie will supply the recipe and get some nori from ya local japanese supermarket!
  18. OMG! How close are the power points to the tank!!!
  19. old age... fish going senile... case closed
  20. get a bigger top up?!!! mines 220 litres (more than 20% of the size of my setup) well worth every cent buying a drum that size. turn the tap on for the day once every 6-8 weeks! my middle names lazy
  21. arhhh, the joys of a downstairs sump room "very" is an understatement. no use having it anywhere else
  22. Would be an interesting test, once your acro's come right again, do a 350+ litre water change see if it happens again. Although as ya say, its more likely crap water as opposed to the size of the WC... arhhh... thats Water Change, not Toilet
  23. i hope you dont mean cutting food costs on the weekly supermarket bill try huhu grubs they're high in protein and free - get enough of them to feed the whole family
  24. there wont be bearers spaced 500mm apart - that would be one solid (and expensive) house the joists will be though my tanks sitting about 200mm off a bearer and on the corner of a pile. i added another post at the other corner of the tank just to be safe!
