  1. really? oh please find where i said that and quote me. i really want to know where i said that. no, in fact the post is about turning a fluid reactor into a cal reactor, not sure why you have just contradicted yourself. makes me wonder who is confused here. anyways, this is my last post on the subject. i dont mind the discussions, but buggered if im going to be misquoted.
  2. are we talking about air pressure now? or are we staying on liquids? have you taken the water out of your tank? should i bother quoting some more from the site above? "The weight of a fluid can exert a pressure on anything underneath it. Also, the relative movement of a liquid or gas can apply a pressure" i give up. we are starting to sound like layton and wasp and other than that, this discussion has been done to death.
  3. Surely not... "Fluid pressure can be in an enclosed container or due to gravity or motion." http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/fluidpressure.htm
  4. no idea but thats the only major difference i could see in my tank around the time it split?
  5. you're starting to sound like wasps best friend suphew, stay on topic, this has nothing to do with our original discussion. if you want to be pedantic about it, you cant have pressure without motion (and if you are going to argue that further, then at a minimum motion at a molecular level) one persons terminology maybe different than anothers so its the point that comes across thats important.
  6. yeah i tried, but unfortunately no
  7. drop your kH to 4, that seemed to trigger mine to split  steve - speaking of growth, after viewing pic's of my tank in july last year and now, my clam has tripled in size in 8 months! it hardly fits the front of my tank, will put some pic's up to show tonight, quite a substantial size in a (relatively) short period of time.
  8. yup, agreed. this is definately a form of pressure too. but then is that because of pump creating water motion or the pump drawing in the water,... or both. i would suggest both. i actually noticed last night, when fine tuning the reactor (and incidentally breaking the piece of plumbing) that water squirted about 6" in the air when it broke. a little more pressure than i had anticipated. incidentally the super glued piece broke again too  dremeling it out and adding a new piece in looks to be my only option
  9. that sux big time dude. the power went off to my tank for about 10 hours once and the temp only dropped to 23 degrees (down from 25) my main concern was water movement (aeration) in the main tank as opposed to heat loss (and a video i watched at a reef meeting a while ago said this was the biggest killer than loss of heat - as reef says the fish can sustain lower temperatures for a little while but no oxygen is worse). the vid said you can buy battery powered air pumps that will suffice in a power outage - problem is if you're not home then its pointless. its got me thinking - specifically what happens with aeration on my tank if power fails now. might hook up a ups specifically for the closed loop. good luck in getting your tank back to normal. if your corals die too send me a PM and I'll donate some frags to get you started again.
  10. good, come up and train my blue tang to eat it then!!! cant stand the stuff, as soon as you remove it the next day there are small clumps of it again. so hard not to pop sometimes i think wasp posted a while back that he had some sort of invert (a crab?) that ate his?
  11. what are you trying to tell us here pies? you gotta mistress?
  12. Can't remember for the 32mm ball valve. Although according to my post in July '04 here I used 35mm holes for 25mm ball valves and that had a good 3-4mm each side to spare from memory. So, to be on the safe side I'd add another 8mm to the ball valve size to cover thread width and some room to add silicon. Typically one overflow will be enough, positoning more for aesthetics. Two overflows for redundancy or massively high flow (greater flow, greater the water level) Not sure about tempered (and as it sounds like you already know it can't be drilled) Make sure holes are drilled too close together or too close to edges. Closest mine are is the overflow hole at about 50mm (edge of hole to edge of glass) Try having two holes drilled when you have a full tank! Nope, I paid a dude to do mine, as above, its all a bit scary
  13. about 28mm. 20mm fitting is inside diameter of ball valve, so then you have thread width of both sides plus a bit of room for some silicon measure the width of the ball valve first then add another 5mm
  14. Pies is 100% correct. First and foremost do more research - learning a bit more than it appears like you currently know (or rather don't know - no offence) prior to even putting a drop of water in your tank is crucial. I'm at about $15-$20k for my tank and still got bits and pieces to go Dont let that put you off either as it can be done for a considerable amount less. Best way to start is to go visit someone with a decent reef (or fish only) setup to get some ideas. I think chatting to someone who's been in the hobby for a while is certainly the best starting point.
  15. can't buy either (unless a retailer is "living" up rock and making a few bucks on it) best way is to get through someone selling up their tank, or at least buy some dead coral rock and a few bits of live rock from someone to help populate it. if you added your location to your profile at least someone could give you a tip on who to buy from
  16. funny you say that i've been looking around for my dremel kit for the last hour and am getting @#$% off i can't find it!!! will see if i can get a piece the same size and glue it in
  17. Cleaned out the calcium reactor tonight. The thin piece of filter wool that sits at the bottom of the reactor was FILTHY, surprised the circulation pump managed. I put the Magnesium chips in then realised I had more calcium carbonate so added that,... then decided might as well add the rest of the Mg. I assume its not a major having Mg half way down in the reactor? (since most say to add on top) And when hooking it back up, a bit to much force pushing the plumbing on the pump and I snapped the plumbing... Anyone know where I can get a replacement part? I've super glued and waiting for it to dry but I really dont think its gonna hold
  18. arghh!!! tested again today (1 week after last test) and everything has dropped again. Mg 1080 kH 6.4 Ca 320 I bought some zeo-mag chips for the reactor which I'll be adding today. Also got some mag chloride as a backup so added some of this now to try and get Mg up a bit. PITA!
  19. nice, gotta hate that valonia tho

    Reefs Reef Tank

reefs got a canon 350D, a middle of the range Canon but still an awesome beast
  21. I've had the same level of service from Jansens everytime. And a great deal less friendly service from HFF the few times I've been there.

    Rock glue

as pomereef says get aqua knead-it - but buy from the warehouse its only about $10 there (and incidentally $20 from placemakers!!!)
  23. ??? you think a quick knife through the middle is less humane than a tight rubber band around the waist? ha hahaaaa!!!!
  24. I haven't laughed so hard in ages!!!
