  1. Indeed, Mg was one of the more expensive Salifert test kits. If JBL are cheaper yet produce the same results, then why not go with the cheaper kit? Although if they produce different results then which test kit is right? I only go with Salifert because of the name - from what I see, hear, read its the most consistant and trustworthy kit in the hobby.
  2. so true. YUCK! but going back to the thread topic, i dont think there is ever a stage where you have too much live rock. i think the issue is the way it is layed out. if you can stack it and still have flow through live rock, then it stops crap from settling in it. i reckon if its too heavily stacked, you end up getting a detritus buildup smothering the bacteria needed for biological filtration. im basing this on my own experience (which perhaps doesnt count for much) so am looking at removing alot of rock out of my tank and having it lower and more spread out. everytime i blast the rocks with a stream so much crap comes out. yet on the other side of my tank where the LR is not piled on top of each other, there is plenty of coralline and no crap in the rocks at all.

Melev is a dude on RC that has his own web site with heaps of good info on sumps, this maybe of interest to you... http://www.melevsreef.com
  4. just cost me $53 for a salifert mg test kit on the weekend, not cheap!

you mean take out the entire length and U section of the standpipe the water level stays near the top? if so, increase the pipe down, too risky. water level should drop to near the bottom of the overflow chamber. with standpipe in, should be halfway (or thereabouts) across the U section.
  8. i had a 2215 on my 160 litre freshwater tank about 6 years ago, really good, 10/10
  9. costly but damn cool looking fish
  10. can we get these here? a school of them would look pretty cool... http://www.marinecenter.com/fish/wrasse ... irywrasse/
  11. hence the reason we have onscreen names. yes, its chimera. james is my alter-ego  yes, the one just above my "yuck" post could not disagree more, very unnatural. find me a reef that looks like that. and the brick wall look? yes, i find that bloody ugly too!!! and i am talking about the layout, not the corals in particular or the colour.

or in my case, valonia  i would go a little larger than 2-3mm, more like 5mm
  13. yuck imo! nice colours, but in terms of layout in my bottom 5! i prefer a natural appearance and a more 3D look. that looks like a giant frag growout tank
  14. definately go wider. i have 5x2x2, new tank will be 6x3x2 (or maybe even 1 metre wide) makes a big difference to what you can do with aquascaping. obviously means more lighting though so bear that cost in mind!

it is exceptionally quiet, although it does make a gurgling every now and then. for me personally, i stick to durso coz its less risk IMO, a tried and true method. plus the fact my tanks in a separate room so i cant hear it from the lounge anyway. couldnt you use a combination of both methods?
  16. thinking the same thing today when looking at my "wall of rock". less than most would think i reckon, much less.

you kinda got your closed loop pump around the wrong way, should have had the outlet feed directly up and into the tank so it doesnt need that 90 degree bend. not that its gonna make an overly big difference, but makes it tidier
  21. temperature controller off jetskisteve? my temp usually hangs around 25 on the dial (although it can move up and down from 24.7 to 25.6) still, pretty much nice and stable and never any white spot treat the cause not the symptom?
  22. can anyone answer these questions?... Can water flow make a difference to growth patterns? It has really bright red tips - but only at night time, why would that be?
  23. What is quite interesting is the lighting that is (was) above it. it had two 150W halides (last photo is under a 400W 14K for about a week) Anyways the 150W to the left (where most growth is) is a 10K the 150W on the right is a 14K. Seems to like the 10K light one hell of alot more? Can water flow make a difference to growth patterns too? It does have a stream blasting it from right to left too. It has insanely awesome bright red tips at night time too, why would that be?
