  1. tis true as this is the closest to sunlight i believe. however major downside is this is also the Kelvin rating that most bad algaes thrive under
  2. I find 10k is too yellow, 20k is too blue. 14k is a good general in the middle (but as stated above, it can differ between manufacturers)
  3. use cyclop-eeze, take the hassle out of it
  4. ??? reef? im also interested in doing this.

    Baby banggai

rotifiers then brine shrimp according to his first post. i assume (and certainly hope) it's not fully grown adult brine shrimp food as they will choke on it and die. http://www.reefs.org/library/article/f_marini.html bangaii's are so cool. well done reef, nice job so far, very impressed! keep us updated.
  6. reef does. similar topic this time last year! http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=3335

you might get people asking for a frag

    FOWLR setup

you can still be stealthy without a sump. just plan it well and buy equipment with the smallest footprint possible
  9. yes. time, patience and common sense will help cure it. you're going through the stage that alot of people get frustrated with and give up - i hear that cyano is a big cause of people giving up the hobby! keep persisting and you'll be sweet. also - do as brian says above and look at streams (expensive/awesome) or seio's (cheaper/good), they're designed for much wider flow than your typical powerhead so get movement into most areas well.

    FOWLR setup

with a FOWLR a top-rated skimmer is not so crucial as fish can handle higher levels of nitrates than corals. weipro should be sufficient. however you want to ensure your filtration is good enough to keep unwanted algae to a minimum - but perhaps not so minimum your fish have nothing to graze on!
  11. dont use any chemical products. fix the cause of the problem and it will eventually go away. for the meantime, keep physically syphoning it out (it should peel off, dont scrub it off or it will become worse). your tank is probably about 4-6 months old? generally it starts coming on after brown algae. most importantly increase water flow within your main tank. here is the cyano i had about a year ago.
  12. no idea. the 2nd fuge is just for the hell of it, i had the room, had the equipment, figured it would come in handy for all sorts of things. idea now is to kick start pod growth then i'll chuck the ones that grow in there into the main fuge and hopefully it should multiple from there. idea later could use it as a qt tank, might breed clowns in it, might have it as a trial nano or even a separate frag grow out tank. who knows?
  13. i created a stand under the fuge today for a pod tank - a small 2 foot (70 litre) tank (separate to the main system) I had all the bits and pieces spare so thought why not (had the tank, a small airstone skimmer, spare heater and light and little powerhead) Only thing I found was the light had a 'marine glow' actinic - shouldnt matter though. The water was taken from the fuge (then I did a 200 litre water change with ASW - for a change - there goes $50... ) I also took out some sand and a couple bits of LR from the fuge. Chances are there are some pods in that water somewhere so hopefully they'll start 'podpulating' Here's how the pod tank looks: and here's a pic of where the pod tank is placed: Do you think I need to feed the tank (thus feed the pods?) Might sprinkle a bit of cyclop-eeze in to add a little bit of nutrients to the water as there are no fish?
  14. 1500 x 600 x 600 is common. personally if i were to do a 5 footer again i'd go 700 back and 600 high. sump size? allow for equipment, mainly personal preference - the bigger the better obviously. i'd say minimum 3 foot on a 5 foot tank. allow for a refugium too if you're building a specific sump room. my 5 footer display has 3 foot sump and 4 foot fuge. http://www.deepblueaquarium.co.nz/ for weipro skimmers
  15. so the smaller model turbo skimmers then. the medium/large ones run eheims. if there is a performance enhancement for these too do tell - actually, why not just post. would be interested to know either way.
  16. acrylic is quite expensive, unless you can source some 2nd hand then glass maybe better. however acrylic is obviously moldable (sp?) and easier to cut. you can always make a hybrid like i did - a 3 foot glass tank with perspex baffles. glueing perspex is alot more difficult than with glass too.
  17. yeah i realised that after I'd asked  forgot she'd be a little cut-down kernel running on a little device with little chips
  18. as in distribution, is it redhat, suse, devian, mandrake etc. not important, just curious. good luck with it!
  19. so you got time frames for each stage? are you going to get the base model done first then add new features as you go or the whole thing in one hit? its gonna run a linux kernel right? so you should be able to keep the code small enough what flavour? are you writing it all or having someone help? i have a mate who is uber smart with electronics and he's wanting to get back into it (purely on the hobby side) if you need any assistance - he's an extreme brain box - one of those people who reads a book one night then is a guru on the subject the following day i hate when he does it too...
  20. so what features will it have? have you decided on all them yet?
  21. seen this one layton? http://www.aquatronica.com/eng/products/acq_products.htm
  22. whoa man that is phat! that guy oogie is one smart dude!
  23. cool. im very tempted to get an ar380 and build one too. they're about 8 gallon (36 litres)
