any egs that werent fertilised will be absorbed into the fishs body as food
spawning is the same as giving birth
the tank should be well planted to give hiding places for the baby fish and to provide food eg infusoria
and finnaly id say it would be best to move the pregnant fish to tanks by themselves so the babies have a better chance of not being eaten
good luck with the remaining eggs but i think with out a male in there the eggs wont get cleaned and grow fungus and die that is if they were even fertilised damn shame about your male dying
when you get another male youll have to condition your female again for about a week or 2 so she has a chance to produce more eggs
btw if you get another male who isnt interested in looking after the nest after spawning jus cut the base off a coke bottle and stand it up in the tank and put the female in there close enough to the nest so the male can see her he'll think hes gonna get anothe go at spawning and keep the nest in tip top condition
you really need to use a course sand or a really fine gravel like 1mm crushed granite and i think that all poolfilter sand is the same everywhere posibly a different material but should all be the same size
if it is intended for a cichlid tank id go for coral crush and granite mix cos the coral is a great buffer to keep your ph above 7 ive been using it for years and swear by it
finer gravel is also goos cos food cant get into it and it holds less gas pockets but if your going to use sand makesure you clean it really well and let it settle fully b4 you use any mechanical filters as the sand particles get into the impeller and rip the shit out of it
id say get a large cl and should have no dramas ive seen it done with all types of cichlid
americans, tangs and malawis with no dramas at all
and just like other fish cl will adjust to higher ph levels
uv sterilisers do what the name implys they sterilise your wate from harmful germs and bacteria and also inhibit the growth of algae the best use for them is in large out door ponds and when you have several tanks hooked to the same water eg one tank flowing into another running off one filter
ppl put these in place so that if one tank gets sick the second third and so on wont get sick

there have been scientific tests done that states that salt i freswater tanks attacks the gills and respitory system in fish so i say if you want to suffocate your fish dont bother with the salt just throw them out the back on the lawn
im also interested in bettas soon gonna be in nz (june 8th) and have had to give up my yellow crown tail fighters bred by one of malaysia's best breeders and imported to australia
due to the strict import laws in nz i cant bring my fish with me
but any info anyone can give me would be a great help
im looking for price and availability in the south island of decent bettas not veil tails (for obvious reasons such as their just plain boring) id be after half moons double tails and crown tails
and while im at it how hard is it to get lfs's to import fish in nz?
id say go with something other than neons cos they die at the drop of a hat if you really want to do a cycle with fish id suggest using something a little stronger maybe guppys or mollies(do you have mollies in nz?) neons may survive the hard times with amonia and nitrate spikes but for a good idea of whats going on id go for hardier fish
just my 2c
the first 3 look to be all allounocaria not sure of the species but im pretty sure there all peacocks (allounnocaria genus)
the blue one couldnt be electric blue hap cos they dont get egg spot so ive been told any way
dont know much about eels but i have kept oscars b4 they are really mesy eaters so youll need a good filter and have to clean the filter often on the other hand they all have great personality usualy loners unless you got a big tank and they can be taught to eat out of your hand (its the coolest feeling having fish eat out of your hand) and the best thing of all obout oscars is if your breeding other fish and need to cull out any deformed fry the oscars get a free feed
quote]have to disagree Alan, while the fish sinkers themselves are perhaps not an issue, the hooks just down the line have been known to cause problems
in my 4 foot cichlid tank i only ever changed the water once a month and only bout 15% but i do over filter the tank with a 1600l?hr powerhead and aquaclear 500 hob filter neevr had any probs and always chechk the chemical levels eg. ph nitrates ammonium calcium and
so on
i meant im moving to nz and unfortunately due to strict import and quarentine laws i cant bring my fish or tanks
sorry if you read it wrong ive already lived in nz b4 and loved it cant wait to get back
i dont remember being as happy in australia as i was in nz
