  1. I just hope they beef up their security. Presumably they were not running any carbon filters. It is hard to imagine the mentality of the people who did this, but looks like all zoos/aquaria etc need better security. Looks like they broke into the water supply which was outside the building. PS: An anonymous philanthropist is offering to pay for a security camera system and to fund a guard.
  2. The vandals threw chlorinated cleaning products into the water supply.
  3. I wondered if it were someone anti fish as this site went down the same time this was reported on the TV.
  4. there must be a lot of different algae that is called hair algae. Mine looks like this one http://aquadiem.wordpress.com/2007/06/2 ... ladophora/ and is tough, stringy, and non slimy. Yours looks like the slimy stuff which just falls apart when you try and grab it. It certainly won't be easily removed with a toothbrush.
  5. Yours looks like the green algae that used to grow my tank walls, plants and stones. Ended up emptying the tank to get rid of it.
  6. this is what I call hair algae ( to the right, and to the left is some Xmas moss )
  7. Yours looks more ill defined that the hair algae in my tank. I had to move my tank the other day, and after draining 3/4 of the water I used my hands to pull the stuff out. It forms a tight mat on the bottom of the tank but often comes out in large dark green threads which I then give to my gold fish to eat. It certainly doesn't break up easily as it can uproot plants as you remove it. Can you pull some out and take a picture?
  8. Probably going to be part of the investigation. Can you imagine glass shards flying towards you at that speed?
  9. Except in Christchurch, NZ is becoming increasingly secular. However, that's no reason not to have a decent holiday, and give the retailers something to look forward to each year. But I wish they wouldn't keep rerunning the same Xmas movies each year!
  10. Does it help with making the firewood smaller?
  11. http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/asia/81256 ... es-at-mall Wonder why they used 15 cm glass instead of acrylic? Has put me off having a shark tank in my lounge!
  12. Looks like a shallow water culture so no growing media. So, just plant roots and undersurface of the raft, and other tank surfaces. Still wondering how they do the electrics and plumbing.
  13. First you want to generate a hypothesis so want to see possibly affected tanks. Then when testing that hypothesis you cant hen look at controls.
  14. It's not necessary to invert the tank as well!
  15. Piscene TB just means fish tuberculosis. ie. disease Mycobacterium marinum is one of the species that causes the disease in both tropical freshwater and marine animals ie. a bacterial cause of the disease http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/223363-overview
  16. FMB = Fish Mycobacteria ?? Bactrim - don't think it's available anymore, too many side effects ( people crashed their bone marrows ) Mycobacteria marinum - long expensive treatment. Not worth it unless you've got some really precious fish. Also it poorly gram stains. Polymerase chain reaction probe would be quickest way to make a diagnosis.
  17. Feed was in my proposed spreadsheet list. Looks like it got dropped.
  18. Wouldn't it be just easier to turn the heater upside down? Same effect as your proposed wiring change, and wouldn't void the warranty.
  19. Because there is no proof yet that there is any mystery illness affecting your fish, and you might just be culling all your fish on account of a statistical blip.
  20. Do the fish shops run UV filters to kill bacteria and viruses passing in the common water?
  21. Perhaps those who want to investigate this issue construct some spreadsheets of where you live, water supply, what fish, where purchased, how long in your tank, what you're using to feed them, water parameters, symptoms and time to death etc. And then collate all the data to see what the pattern is if any. Oh yeah, and if you use any fertilizers or other additives.
  22. Might be all from the same importer .... or the putative infection has been transferred from one fish purchased from the common store, to other fish in the tank. But hey, I just deal with human disease including looks like some grumpy ones.
