  1. You would have to empty the tank of water if you wanted to make the holes bigger if the tank was up and running. Not sure how difficult it would be to make them bigger I would imagine it is something you only want to do once
  2. Hmmmmmm 40mm looks pretty big actually maybe mine are 25mm. Anyways go bigger than the filter you get in case you upgrade later on
  3. I would drill 2 holes in each end brace so 4 holes all up, if you want to change the setup after a while you already have the holes drilled. I think mine are 35mm and they are to small to get the hoses for an fx5 through. I'd go 40 you only wanna do this once so cover all your bases.
  4. Nautilus will be the go. 2 cf1200s will give u twice the amount of intakes/outlets that will be visible in the tank. I would go 55 wide not 55 high. Malawis will appreciate more width than height

    cichlid ID please

Agree with rcon body shape is wrong for a jacob hybrid of some type
  6. I think he's got ice blues not electric blues. Ice blues are an mbuna and electric blues are haps. The dems get to around the 10cm mark, ice blues about 14cm electric yellows around the 12cm mark approximately. How big are these fish now? Even a 120 litre tank is small. The dimensions of the tank are more important than the volume of the tank.
  7. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you will need a 4ft tank at least to house your cichlids long term. Demasoni are hyper aggressive and need to be in groups of 20 not 4 to spread out the aggression.Think ice blues get pretty nasty to. 62liters isn't gonna cut it. Have a look in the "cichlid" section on here, heaps of good info.
  8. Yeah I totally agree with what you are saying about peacocks. It would be impossible to introduce new blood lines in nz with what we have available.
  9. I'm interested to know why introducing a new blood line can be harmful. I can understand it being harmful if you had an established colony say like my dubs who have been inbred and you added a new blood line of say wc or f1, but if you added another colony that has been inbred but from a diff line would it do more harm than good?. Sorry kinda hi jacked this thread.
  10. Great looking sump can't wait to see how well the baskets work. I wouldn't imagine u would want to silicone them on as it would be a mission to get them off if you ever need to do maintenance. But, I know squat about sumps.
  11. Both. Mainly hybrids but flymike mentioned inbreeding as well
  12. I don't see how we can avoid inbreeding in nz we have such a small gene pool and with no new strains or very few being imported it is very hard to find diff blood lines to breed with.
  13. Nah not boring at all great colour combo and a big colony of dems when fully grown look awesome. My advice would be to look for some good quality yellows, pref from people on here as most of the yellows on tm look rubbish

  16. Nice. Will be a nice looking tank with dems and yellows
  17. Nice lookin forward to seeing it filled. Have you sorted out your stock list?
  18. Looking good mate. Will look even better when you take out the internal filters. Nice looking dems.
  19. Hows the tank going? Everyone gettin along, any updated photos?
  20. Ryan used to have some really nice tropheops from memory. They to would look nice in a species tank great colour contrast between m and f.
  21. I think you pretty much covered most of the mbuna. I have seen dogtooth afra and rusties but thats about it. Haps are about the only malawians we have here that you can still find some nice examples of. There are so many rubbish peacocks and mbuna around. Pretty hard to got hold of any decent mbuna.
  22. If that had been your wc schedule for 2yrs and you have had no problems then I would be surprised ifbthat was the issue. Still, wouldnt hurt to clean ya fx5 out. Mine is probably due for a clean to. Hope you dont lose anymore fish.
  23. I feed my trophs and calvus twice a day morning and night with 1 day off a week prob a bout enough that its all gone in about 45 seconds each feed. Do a 50% wc every 7 days and my nitrate is around 15-20 on the api test kit. I reckon they are a little under fed but I am happy with their growth rate and they always attack their food at feeding time .
  24. Man that sucks they are at their best when they start hitting the 20 cm + mark. Weird that he would just keel over like that I take it all the othet fish are ok. How big are your wc if you are doing 1 wc every 2wks 30 fish of that size is a lot of waste. Could it be water issues?
