Another thing that can be used underneath is a layer of neoprene. And the reason I would guess that the glass popped at the corner is because of the added stresses from when they bend the glass.
Glass is an insulator, and the electronics inside are fairly simple, so I wouldn't worry about shorts. But if it starts showing fault I would stop using it.
