  1. http://www.bbayaquariums.com/demasoni-cichlid.html 29 gallons is about 110 litres. I've decided to stick with minnows for now. I don't think we can afford to get even 6 of these plus a larger tank, etc... I also think I should start with easy fish and work my way up over the years... I also don't want to have more than one type of fish at once. Thanks for all your advice and offers. It is much appreciated.
  2. Ok I'm just really thinking about it at the moment.. .deciding on what I want. Thank you all for your wonderful offers. I will get back to you ASAP. Can you tell me what size tank (how many litres) I would need to have the Pseudotropheus Demasoni? And how many do I need? I thought 3 would be ok but it sounds like I need a lot. How do you define a school of fish?
  3. Oh I never decided against any particular fish. I think the reason I was going to get minnows is they were the ones I liked most out of the danios and minnows. And they only grow to 4cm. The fighters are lovely. Something about the purple with black stripes though.... but yes the fighters are beautiful too.
  4. Blueeyes unfortunately the largest tank I can have is 60x30x30 as I only have one place to put the tank and that's the largest size that will fit there.
  5. Okie dokie I think it is a Pseudotropheus demasoni. I would need a heater for this one?? Could I get away with having 1-2 of these in a 50L tank?
  6. I'm not sure about plants. Then I would need a light. I don't mind having fake ones.
  7. yeah good point about the name. Oh well! No I went to Papakura High, but have a few friends that went to Rosehill. We moved to Papakura in 1990, before that we lived in Bucklands Beach. I was 11 when we moved here. Blueeyes yes I saw a post of yours before I registered and saw you live in Papakura. I don't have any fish yet. I'm thinking I will get Minnows. However, I saw a lovely fish today at Animates in Henderson. Purple with black stripes. I believe it is coldwater/freshwater - it was in a tank below danios and minnows. I will have to wait until I have a bigger tank.
  8. I saw a beautiful purple fish with black stripes at Animates today. I can't remember it's name. It was with the cold/freshwater fish. Anyone know?
  9. Ok so a few more questions lol 1. How many litres of water does a 60x30x30 tank hold? 2. How many small coldwater fish can it hold eg minnows? 3. How much gravel do I need?
  10. Josh yes I saw that one. I've just been on TradeMe lol If I get a bigger tank it won't be able to be any bigger than that one as I measured where it would go and it needs to be 62x32x32 or less. But the seller said the internal silicone isn't good. What does that mean? Is that easy to fix? My husband works at a Plastics company ... I wonder if they could make a tank lol
  11. Thank you all I will have a think about it and let you know.
  12. Ok so I recently learned about flukes that freshwater fish etc can carry. I'm just curious.. I won't be getting freshwater fish (strictly coldwater) but does anyone here know about flukes? If you have freshwater fish can you get them from your fish? I've read you can get flukes. And I've read peoples stories about having them I learnt about them when I was researching about parasites. I'd never heard of them.
  13. Hi my name is Renee, I'm 32, married and we have 2 girls ages 6 and 4. We live in Papakura.
  14. At this stage we will have to make do with the 15L. Possibly after Christmas (if I am given money like I got for my birthday) I could get a 21L maybe a 35L.
  15. http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/catal ... KU=1429315 It looked big enough for one goldfish to me. The 21L is $89.95 and the 35L is $119.95. They don't have any bigger ones. The 21L looked big to me.
  16. Thanks Diver. Ok so, I won't need a heater if I get a minnow or leopard? Yes it was oxygen weed lol It's been so long lol I think she had some kind of white round block as well... looks like the stuff you put in bird cages they use for their beaks....
  17. I wish I had found this forum BEFORE I got my 15L tank recently. Thought it would be a good Christmas present for the kids. I was only going to put one fish in it. But we are on a tight budget and my limit is $100 and I've already spent $50 on the tank and I guess I could take it back and get the bigger one that is over $80 but then I will have to spend more to get everything and we don't have the money right now. I honestly thought one goldfish would be fine in there... my mum had a bowl when we were kids and it was about the same size (in litres) I think or probably smaller and the goldfish never died. I always thought that it was like a plant... if it's in a pot it will only grow so much and then stop. If it's in the ground it keeps on growing. I thought goldfish will only grow to a certain size depending on the size of their bowl/tank.
  18. Are there any other coldwater fish that are small like Siamese fighters?
  19. Unfortunately, I can't afford to get a bigger tank. The one I got was $50. It sure seems a lot more expensive to have fish these days
  20. I thought the tank was big enough. It looks about the same size as the bowl my mum had (how much water it would hold). I've seen goldfish bowls on Trade Me that are only 8L and this is almost double that. I was only going to have one fish. I don't want to be cruel to the fish ... it's just we are on a limited budget. It's a Christmas present and the max I was going to spend was $100. I know it's not a lot. Unfortunately it's a bad time for us financially... How much do heaters cost? Um I don't have a water siphon. How does it work? My mum just used to remove everything from the tank eg fish, water, stones, plant, etc and clean it all out, clean the stones and any other decorative stuff and then put clean water in the bowl, and the fish, etc back in. What is Bettamin? We are in Papakura, South Auckland. Unfortunately we don't even have a pet shop here now. I went to it the other day and it was closed and everything is gone. So we will have to go to Drury or Takanini or Manukau from now on....
  21. 4. What other supplies do Siamese Fighting fish require, that Goldfish don't? 5. Do you need a PH tester and Water Ager with Goldfish? We had a goldfish bowl and a couple of goldfish when I was a kid and I don't think my mum had either of these. 6. Is it ok to use an air filter and pump with goldfish? The tank comes with these. 7. If I choose to use gravel instead of silica sand, if I get white gravel would a blue light still work? Or could I use a normal light next to the fish tank with a colored bulb? 8. What other things do Goldfish need, other than fish food? It's been so long since we had goldfish I don't remember much. I think we had some kind of green plant in the bowl. Does anyone know what that is? The same thing Dex had in his fish bowl on Home And Away if anyone else here watches it LOL Sorry for all the questions.
  22. 1. What is the difference between coldwater fish and freshwater fish? I recently got a 15L aquarium for my kids for Christmas. I still have to get a few more things and the fish of course... I don't know whether I will get a goldfish or a Siamese Fighting fish. It all depends on the difference in costs eg food, maintenance (having to buy new suppies eg sand on a regular basis), etc Because we are on a limited budget unfortunately. On the side of the box it says I need to get 3kg gravel, PH tester, Water Ager. So for my other questions - 2. I would like to use silica sand and a blue light. However, can you use these with goldfish? And I am guessing the silica sand has to be replaced every time you clean the tank out? 3. If you can use a blue light with goldfish - anyone know how much a small 30cm or less one is? Do they make ones this size that you can have IN the water? I saw a couple of blue lights on Trade Me that go in the water. However, they were too big.
